Capitol Design takes 1st and 2nd place design award!

1st place winner of 2010 CoTY

Two kitchen designs by Capitol Design

won 1st and 2nd place awards in the Washington, DC 2010 CoTY design competition. The CoTY (Contractor of The Year) award showcases the best in remodeling and design. Nice Contracting enlisted the help of Capitol Design to design the kitchens for both projects. The first place winner featured a faux refrigerator panel which was actually the door to the mudroom! The 11' island had comfortable seating for four.

As it's focal point, the 2nd place award kitchen had a custom-made copper hood with hammered straps and square rivets that emphasized the Mission styled theme of the cabinetry. A large, black painted, distressed maple island was topped by a 3" thick carrera marble counter. A copper apron front sink and copper island sink were paired with oil- rubbed bronze faucetry and accessories. The bronze pot filler  above the range added the finishing touch.

2nd place winner

Both kitchens were outfitted with the latest Sub-Zero refrigeration and Wolf appliances. The 2nd place winner had power saving LED lighting in the glass door cabinets and under the wall cabinets as well. Power strips

containing the various switches and outlets were installed under the wall cabinets allowing each kitchen to have uninterrupted backsplashes.

A Tale of Two Kitchens

There once were two families with kitchens in shambles,

One family was smart the other one gambled.

We need to remodel, both families agreed,

So they started their planning to see what they'd need.

One family choose  blue with yellow accents,

The other thought white with stainless made sense.

They purchased new products, not made from cheap tin,

Let's do it right this time, not over again.

But now it was time to hire a GC,

One family saw value, the other his fee.

He is professional, dependable the one family said,

He's too high, said the other, and went and hired Fred.

Six months now have past since the projects began,

One family eats in their new kitchen, the other from cans.

You see, Fred was much cheaper, and how hard could it be,

It only takes a few days on Reality TV.

The kitchen's half done, and that half is all wrong,

The family hired another GC, because Fred is long gone.

I'll make the story's moral as simple as I can,

Choose a professional, not a flash in the pan.

First, you gotta go to Venice!first

I met Maxine about five years ago when I designed a new kitchen for her.  She was the kind of client you hope for on every project; enthusiastic, realistic in her expectations and thrilled with the results. During the project visits, I noticed several framed photos of her two girls and some beautiful landscape shots.  Although I've never pursued it, I've always been interested in photography. I assumed the images were professionally shot, but Maxine said no; she had taken them. From that point on, no visit was complete without admiring her other images and hearing the stories behind them (as well as learning about some of the photo shop techniques she uses!)

On one particular visit, I was admiring a photograph she had taken in Venice, Italy. The water, the sky and the buildings were so colorful, and the image was so sharp; I was just amazed. While gazing at the beautiful scene and thinking of all the crummy photos I had taken over the years, I said with some frustration, "Maxine, how in the world do you get a picture like that?"  With a serious look, Maxine answered, "First, you gotta go to Venice!"

After being a corporate attorney for many years, Maxine has now decided to follow her passion and talent for photography.  A visit to her website reveals numerous award-winning images from around the world and in the Nation's Capitol.

I haven't been to Venice yet, but Maxine has inspired me. That inspiration coupled with encouragement from my other professional photographer friends, John and Cassidy Olson, has compelled me to learn some basic techniques to make the most of the pictures I do take.
