From the desk of Sr. Elyse Marie
Advent, Christmas, a New Year, each full of opportunities to say "Yes" to the transforming grace found in the heart and mind of Christ. Through our acceptance of vocation ministry, we are intimately involved in the yearning of Advent, the mystery of Emmanuel, and the invitation to begin again as bearers of Christ in our world and time. Woven through December and January is Mary's "Yes". Her fiat accompanies us in a particular way these months as we live out our response to and participation in these holy mysteries of our Emmanuel.
Recently I read that the initials of each Latin title in the O Antiphons-- Sapientia, Adonai, Radix, Clavis, Oriens, Rex, and Emmanuel -- combine to form SARCORE. When this is arranged backwards, it spells ERO CRAS, which means "Tomorrow, I will be." The author went on to say, "This coincidence seems to be Christ answering our pleas". I read, "Christ answering our pleas - to be with us as we become who we are called to be from our Baptism". It had not occurred to me before how these ancient antiphons, these Messianic titles for Christ, offer reflection for us as vocation ministers. Yet, indeed they do. Positioned as they are before our recitation of the Magnificat, Christ points us to his mother as the model of the faith, obedience and love capable of bringing Him into the world. Mary's "Yes" empowers our own "Yes".
May the days and weeks ahead allow us to approach the ministry of vocation awareness and invitation with our focus on the coming of Jesus "in Scripture and sacraments, in community, in the poor, in the stirrings of our hearts" and in the joy of uttering, "Yes, Lord. Digo sí, Señor."

O Radix Jesse: Sowing Seeds of Vocation Awareness in the Parish
"O Flower of Jesse's stem, you have been raised up as a sign..."
Our CAVA Parish Vocation Fairs act as signs for parishioners- the sign of religious life as a viable option for those longing to love God and serve the Church. A glimpse of how this sign works is contained in a message the office received from Fr. Gregg Gorczyca of St. Theresa Church in Palatine following their November 12 & 13 Parish Vocation Fair. At St. Theresa's fair we were nine religious congregations of sisters, brothers and priests as well as the Diocesan Vocation Office. It was quite a crowd.
"On behalf of the pastor and all the priests in the parish I want to say thank you to all the religious sisters and priests who participated in the Parish Vocation Fair. Everyone in the parish was saying that they had never seen anything like this in their parish and were very pleased. My hope is there will be someone stirred in the parish to pursue a religious or ordained vocation. I will also encourage other priests to invite CAVA Parish Vocation Fairs to their parishes. Thank you very much and Happy Thanksgiving! " Fr. Gregg
Be a part of this "sign". As plans are made, each parish suggests a limit of display tables they can accommodate. On Sunday, January 15, 2012 we will be having a vocation fair at St. Christina's Parish in Chicago. St. Christina's number of tables is "unlimited"! Help us break our record of eighteen religious congregation tables at one parish fair! Click here for more planning details for the January fair at St. Christina's. RSVP a table reservation to Sr. Dot Dempsey, OP ddempseyop@sbcglobal.net .

O Riens: Offering Sunlight and Watering Often
"O Radiant Dawn, splendor of eternal light, sun of justice, come shine..."
We have to do more than simply "plant" the seeds of vocation awareness. These seeds need to be kept in the light and watered often. Our CAVA Education Committee programs do just that. Now and then our members will ask if we know what the "results" are for these efforts. Read on and decide for yourself.
At Annunciata School, Fr. Andrew Torma, MSC presented the Renewing Your Call faculty program. Out of a possible total of 240 collective points, the RYC evaluations totaled 239! Some of the comments by participants included:
"I have a deeper insight into my own vocation and the importance of developing vocations with my students."... "I gained insight into my own personal strengths and my role in education about vocations."... "The activities helped me become aware of the impact I make on others."
After CAVA presented Individual Classroom Visits to grades K-5 and a Round Table Discussion on Vocations to Religious Life with the Junior High classes, St. Cyprian School sent the following message:
Thank you very much for helping to organize this past week's vocation presentation. We had positive feedback from the students as well as the teachers.
Our Junior High students (round table) felt it was interesting and informative. This added to our religion class discussion on how God calls each of us. Often we talk about taking some quiet time to hear God speak. Always trying to "plant" the seed.
Our primary teachers and students just loved Sr. Kathleen! The teachers felt she was very good with the little ones and as she moved to the 4th and 5th graders she kept them engaged.
Thank you again for your sharing this program with us.
You too can be a part of these rewarding experiences. Available to all of our CAVA members are excellent Vocation Presentation Outlines for grades 1 - High School. These outlines, shared with us by the Dominican Sisters of Springfield, offer many helpful ideas for converting your passion for our consecrated lives into age-appropriate presentations. Once you read these over, you will be confident to add your name to our list of Education Program presenters!

O Rex Gentium: CAVA Latina - Creando relaciones "King of all nations, the only joy of every human heart..."
It is all relationship, relationship, relationship-discovering the unique expression of the "only joy of our human hearts" in our differences and our similarities. Fr. Marco Mercado, Director of the Office for Hispanic Catholics, and Mr. Jorge Rivera, Coordinator for Hispanic Young Adult Ministry, named"Acompañamiento Pastoral" as the single most important way for religious to be present to these young adults. CAVA Latina is embracing this invitation. We have so much to learn. The opportunities are many; to name a few- ESFOREscuela Formación Leadership Program classes, Jornadas faith formation groups, and during this month of December, the annual ritual of the Holy Family's journey of hope and joy, Posadas. Only within relationship can we offer a genuine invitation to consider a vocation to the consecrated life.
After being present at the Sunday evening prayer and Jornadas study sessions, we learned Jornadas has an annual "Growth" retreat. This year's was being planned for the Thanksgiving weekend. Concern that the retreat be affordable to as many young adults as possible was at the heart of the discussion. A thought crossed our minds - perhaps we could provide a meal. God is good. Through the generous pricing offered by Arturo's Tacos, CAVA was able to provide a "delicioso" menu of chicken, beans, rice, salad, salsa and chips. This was greeted appreciatively Friday afternoon with a round of rousing Spanish cheers!
The commitment to human hearts connecting and building relationships, is what convinced two of our members to brave Black Friday traffic, meet Arturo's at the door, lead the blessing prayer and help serve the 70+ retreatants gathered at St. Hedwig's. Christened "Señoras de la Comida", (a reference to a statue of Our Lady whose home is in the kitchen) and presented with spontaneously written notes expressing "Thank you for the delicious food. Thank you for serving us. May God bless you!" by the grateful retreatants, our Sisters left realizing that they had been the ones fed.
This is how we build relationships. It takes time. Thanksgiving weekend, Sunday afternoons, and evenings are just two examples of investing in relationship-building through accompaniment. Indeed it is worth every minute! Contact the office today 312-534-5240 or cava@archchicago.org if you, too, feel called into this area of vocation ministry through CAVA Latina.

| CAVA Nun Run needs your help!
The weekend of February 3-4, 2012 will be this year's first CAVA Nun Run. Some of our newer members may ask, "What is a "Nun Run?" Briefly,it is a 24+ hour experience during which single women ages 18-40 are invited to visit Sisters' houses (convents) and to spend time with Sisters who are ministering in the Chicago area. At each stop they learn first-hand how each Community is making a difference for the people in the Chicago area and beyond. They are invited to have a glimpse into the Sisters' lives of prayer and community. At several stops they enjoy the Sisters' cooking. Transportation is provided and there is no fee for the weekend.
The Nun Run committee needs your help to "get the word out". Click here to print copies of the flyer and brochure. Thank you in advance for distributing them at your local parishes, at a college or university near you, and to the young women you or your members suspect are curious about the lives of religious women.
