Education Workgroup
Yesterday, NH CAN made history - the Education Workgroup became the very first NH CAN Workgroup conducted via video conference. With thanks to our Partners at the UNH Cooperative Extension, participants were able to brainstorm on Education related Priorities from sites in Boscawen, Newport and Durham. There was a robust discussion of education related issues on the horizon for the next legislative session (click here for full notes) . We looked at bills retained in the past legislative session, as well as newly proposed bills and concerns about potential areas of legislative action.
Some areas of discussion were about the proposed Constitutional Amendment on Education Funding, attempts to abolish the Department of Education, correcting myths (such as, state budget cuts will save jobs - 800 educators were laid off in June) and other areas of concern.
But we have only begun our deliberations to determine Priorities for NH's Children. We hope you will join us next Monday, 9/19 at 9 AM. The 2012 Priorities will be decided by those "in the room". If you don't join us, we cannot include your voice or your concerns. The NH CAN coalition is strong and becoming stronger with every additional voice we include. We would love to hear your voice next week!

NH CAN ALERT
(from Sarah Mattson at NH CAN Partner NH Legal Assistance)
Subject: SB 57 (300 percent interest on car title loans) veto override vote -- CAN YOU HELP WITH THE HOUSE VOTE?
Hello,
I am writing to let you know that today(9/7/11) the Senate voted to override the Governor's veto of SB 57 (car title loans). Although this was disappointing, it was not altogether unexpected given that the Senate had passed SB 57 by an 18-6 margin. We did pick up 1 vote, Senator Groen.
We are expecting that SB 57 will more than likely be taken up in the House next week (9/14/11). SB 57 passed the House by only 9 votes.
Please let me know if you or your organization might be able to make calls to House members on SB 57. I would provide a list of Representatives and talking points. I hope you can help!
Thanks,
Sarah

Economic Security Workgroup
The Economic Security Workgroup, while not video conferenced, met to discuss issues on the horizon for the next legislative session related to economic security issues (click here for full notes) . We looked at bills retained in the past legislative session, as well as newly proposed bills and concerns about potential areas of legislative action.
Some areas of discussion were about the proposed Constitutional Amendment to prohibit an income tax, efforts to create livable wage jobs, child support, minimum wage, TANF and many other ideas/concerns.
But we have only begun our deliberations to determine Priorities for NH's Children. We hope you will join us next Monday, 9/19 at 1 PM. The 2012 Priorities will be decided by those "in the room". If you don't join us, we cannot include your voice or your concerns. The NH CAN coalition is strong and becoming stronger with every additional voice we include. We would love to hear your voice next week!
