News from Our Yoga Community                                      September 2012

Greetings!

Running Dragon
Dragon on the run!

Summer's end already? We can hardly believe it is September in this year that seems to be passing all too quickly! As we reflect on this past summer it was filled with some fun and travels, periods of hard work, and a few lazy days as well.

As we paused to reflect on this hodge podge of a summer, one theme came up time and again - QUALITY. Our trips were shorter than we would have liked, the work more intense than we anticipated, and the lazy days too infrequent. What's one to do?

Sleeping Dragon
End of the day dragon.

We [surprise!] turn to lessons from the mat - yes, we often find peace, resolution, and acceptance on that little rectangle of bliss, sweat, and tears! While the amount of time you spend in the yoga room does matter in growing your practice and meditative state, more importantly it is the knowledge that comes with a mindful practice that truly transforms your life. With mindfulness comes awareness, with awareness comes quality, with quality comes a calm presence, a peaceful heart. Bliss if you will.

The habit of mindful practice literally translates to QUALITY of life - no matter the task at hand:

While washing the dishes one should only be washing the dishes, which means that while washing the dishes one should be completely aware of the fact that one is washing the dishes. At first glance, that might seem silly: Why put so much stress on a simple thing? But that's the point. The fact that I am standing there washing these bowls is a wondrous reality. I'm being completely myself, following my breath, conscious of my presence, and conscious of my thoughts and actions. There is no way I can be tossed around mindlessly like a bottle slapped here and there on the waves.

 ~Thich Nhat Hanh

We haven't yet rolled out our mat in front of the kitchen sink, but that may be next! We hope you're enjoying this long Labor Day weekend. We'll also be enjoying it a bit more with our abbreviated class schedule. Please note there is no 6:30 pm class on Sunday, September 2 and no 6:30 pm or 8:15 pm classes on Monday, September 3. All other classes on the schedule remain the same.

See you soon, see you often!

Posture Clinic with Nathan Dennett

What are your personal tips to Bikram Yoga students?

Don't give up yet! The point where you're about to give up is right when you're about to have a breakthrough - don't let a physical plateau put you off either... As a teacher I always see (and say) that there's always room for more! I didn't get into my current shape by wishing and hanging about!

. . . . . . .

On October 20-21 we'll host Nathan Dennett from Sydney, Australia for a 2-day in-depth posture clinic.

Nathan Dennett

Nathan is a six-time International Yoga Asana Championship competitor and is an Australian Men's Yoga Asana Champion. He currently owns Bikram Yoga Sutherland Shire, serves as a judge for yoga championships, and teaches throughout Australia and abroad.

We'll be Nathan's one and only stop, so don't miss out on this opportunity to learn from one of the best! This Posture Clinic is open to all students - young and old, from beginner to advanced.

Nathan will explore the full range of the Bikram Yoga Beginning Series using demonstrations, explanations and plenty of practical information. Day one will focus on the standing series; day two on the floor series. As you move through all 26 postures you'll enhance your practice and come to a deeper understanding of each asana.

Posture Clinic with Nathan Dennett

Saturday, October 20th - Standing Series $70

Sunday, October 21st - Floor Series $70

Posture Clinics will begin at 12 pm and run through 3 pm.

Early Bird Special thru September 30 - $110 for both days

Registration on-line or at the studio begins on August 1st.

Give Back Class to Support
The School of Rock Foundation

Thanks to each of you for helping us support our local Make-A-Wish chapter and helping make Benjamin's wish come true. In total, we raised  $1700!

Starting on September 7th we'll be supporting The School of Rock Foundation. We love supporting local organizations in which our yoga community is involved - and The School of Rock Foundation is one of them!

West Coast Allstar Tour

The School of Rock Foundation was established as a 501(c)3  in February 2009 by parents of music students at the School of Rock in Sandy, UT. These parents identified a growing need for a greater availability of financial aid for young people interested in studying modern music.

The School of Rock Foundation's scholarship fund has allowed young musicians to further their education through music while gaining discipline, performance experience, confidence, teamwork and friendships in the process.

The School of Rock Foundation funds a dozen full and partial scholarships for students at the Sandy School of Rock and hopes to double that number in the next year and expand their efforts to other after school modern music programs. Monthly tuition for scholarship recipients ranges from $175 - $225 or $2100 - $2800 a year. Let's make it happen to support a student for a year of furthering their music education! (They have also provided financial assistance for students to attend summer camps and music tours, fees ranging in price from $500 - $1000, so we don't have to stop at $2,800!)

The School of Rock Foundation recognizes the benefits of music education, and has a 100% volunteer board. It's not often that a nonprofit can claim 100% of all donations to support the organization's mission.

We hope you'll come to the Give Back Class at 6:30 on Friday evening. We donate the studio and the teacher. Please make a generous cash donation and help us support our local community and The School of Rock Foundation. $10 suggested minimum cash donation; pay as you wish.

Michelle's Testimonial

Thursday, May 24th, 2012, I walked into Bikram Yoga Sandy, and my life changed forever.

Honestly, it is hard to explain how, especially considering the room is known as the "Torture Chamber"; but somehow I found something that fulfills me both spirit and boy.  It is AMAZING!

Two months later, July 24th, I started my 30 day challenge.  During this time I experienced a lot of "firsts."  First time I had to leave the room to throw up.  First time I completed every pose without sitting out a pose.  The first time I silenced my "monkey mind".

One first that I didn't expect and am still in awe of is the effect this practice has on my life outside the studio. During this time, it seemed that people who are so dear to my heart had life changing experiences and needed me for support.  While, normally, I would have been in and felt the same chaos they were experiencing, for the first time I felt a calmness that provided the strength my love ones needed.  I really do relate this peace to the yoga.

I look forward to my next 30-day challenge. I appreciate all of the instructors who are so caring and gentle. I have become a firm believer in this "yoga for life"!  Thank you!

We'd love to hear your testimonial, too! Send us an email: [email protected] or visit our website to view other testimonials. You can submit yours there, too.
