News from Our Yoga Community                                      Febuary 2012

It is something - it can be everything - to have found a fellow bird with whom you can sit among the rafters while the drinking and boasting and reciting and fighting go on below. A fellow bird whom you can look after and find bugs and seeds for; one who will patch your bruises and straighten your ruffled feathers and mourn over your hurts when you accidentally fly into something you can't handle.

This creates a playful atmosphere in which one can not only explore their courage through intrepid movement but also receive and give stretches that are very healing to the body and in the process break down barriers with others and establish more trust and connection.  The room will not be heated.

Give Back Class: Utah Avalanche Center

Boone on ChairliftThroughout the year we give back to many community non-profits by providing class packages for charity auctions. We've decided to step up our giving program a few degrees as we launch our Friday night "Give Back Class" on Friday March 2.

Starting March 2, the Friday 6:30 pm class will become a donation class  to benefit a local non-profit.

The Give Back Class is cash only - $10 suggested donation - you pay as you wish. The sign in process has been designed so it WILL NOT take any classes off of your current class package. Class will be on a first-come, first served basis.

We'll be supporting the Utah Avalanche Center throughout the month of March. Sadly, avalanches have taken their toll this year; top that with devastating budget cutbacks from the state for the Center, and the picture becomes even grimmer.

Come to the Give Back Class each Friday at 6:30 pm and help us support the Utah Avalanche Center, so we can all get out there, safely. For more information on the Center, click here.

In and Around the Studio

Two years ago yesterday I had my spinal cord severed surgically to repair a birth defect (I'm nearly 39) and at first I was doing pretty well. Within the first year I was running half-marathons and on my way back to health. There was a lot of pain but I could work through it. Running was particularly beneficial.

Then at around the twelve month mark all my nerves came back on line and the pain was so incredible I couldn't get out of bed some days and on others, I'd just suddenly collapse because my back couldn't bear my weight. By this fall I've been extremely limited in my activity and taking strong pain killers and muscle relaxers around the clock. It's been horrible - I gained thirteen pounds in six weeks - now it's close to 40 pounds, my digestion is shot and I haven't enjoyed life much at all for a long time. Plus I'm really angry about how the back surgery has left me. I'm not myself.

On Saturday night I was desperate, the pain meds were not helping, I couldn't distract myself or get comfortable in any way; so I grabbed my copy of Chronic Pain Solution and read. In it I saw that 96% of back pain can have long term relief with yoga. So I googled local yoga studios with hopes of finding a Bikram Yoga studio. I'd heard about Bikram Yoga from friends who were training to crew for BadWater - an endurance race through Death Valley - and it sounded incredible. Sure enough, your name came up and I signed up for a class yesterday morning . . . on the 2nd anniversary of my surgery.

The class was hard and I spent most of it being completely terrified that I was going to break somehow. When you have severe pain and back issues, fear of making it worse is hard to overcome. But about half way in I noticed my constant back spasms had quieted and my pain was from my muscles working in ways they haven't in years, not from chronic pain radiating from my spine. I had to fight crying from happiness the rest of the class.

Louis was helpful and his presence was so calming that I relaxed for the first time in longer than I can remember.  Just relaxing and breathing was amazing - I didn't know I still had that in me.

Afterwards I felt like an empty balloon. I was exhausted, depleted, but not in pain. I chalked it up to endorphins and went home. After a shower and a rest we went shopping. I went to four stores including Costco. That amount of walking is unheard of for me. In fact, I would have said it was impossible. I came home and was truly wiped out - but not in agony. Then I realized I hadn't taken my pain meds in seventeen hours! I usually take 3-4 pills every four hours. Right then and there my husband signed up for your locals special and will be joining me at class today. I did need to take some meds last night but the amazing thing is that the meds worked. Usually by evening they barely help the pain.

The other thing is that my digestive system started working again naturally and my constant headache went away - after one class!

This morning I woke up at 6:15 ready to take on my day. And I got up. This may not seem like much to a normal person but I usually need medication and physical assistance to get out of bed in the morning. My head practically exploded with shock and joy.

I'm scheduled to come in M,T,W,S,Su and if I can I'll make Th and Fr work too. I'm excited by the results I'm experiencing from just one class - can you imagine what could be accomplished with 100?

Thank you from this first-timer. You gave me what I hope was the first of many wonderful days.

Warmly,
Nicole M.

Mulholland

Matthew Mulholland is a Massage Therapist with more than 12 years experience, specializing in Thai Yoga Bodywork and Deep Tissue Massage. As a Bikram student while living in Miami Beach, he provided his healing arts at two studios in the area, helping to augment and deepen the practice of many fellow students.
