News from Our Yoga Community                                        January 2012

Greetings!

The onset of a new year often lends itself to a time of reflection. It is always positive to clarify and take action towards a personal goal, but it is important to develop a compassionate intention without expectations and attachment. What if we mindfully maintain focus upon our intention of sustaining a healthier way of being? In other words, it is not what we do but it is how we do it that is ultimately healthier.

Sustaining a hatha yoga practice has everything to do with our approach to asana and pranayama. Our daily 90-minute practice is a microcosm of our life practice. Intensity is important in daily practice, but it must be understood in order to finish practice invigorated and full of life. Intensity is not straining. As BKS Iyengar states "Intensity is a mental attitude more than a physical attitude. Intensity is to get totally involved, fully immersed and absorbed in what one is doing. Intense practice means a fast and keen mode of adjusting, correcting, and progressing proceedingly." In addition to the intensity there should intelligence and steadiness of breath that permeates all actions and sensations. When the breath is slow and consistent it calms the nervous system and energizes the body and helps to control emotion. Again, it is not what you do, but how you do it!

Many of you may have just begun your hatha yoga practice and are wondering how it is possible to be 'intelligent' while suffering in class. I encourage you to compassionately maintain your intention throughout your practice and to recognize that the postures are simply the path to a better you. Every day practice will be different, some more challenging then others. It is the your approach that allows you to practice without suffering. Practicing with the right balance of intensity, steadiness, compassion, and curiosity will lead you to success as a consistent yoga practitioner.

Boone Winter 2012Longevity is not what you can do for yourself in a few months, but what can you do for yourself in a lifetime. The longer and more consistent you practice hatha yoga, the greater the benefit. It is the process of experiencing our physical bodies in asana and pranayama that leads us on a path of internal understanding, or self-realization, of our true human nature of happiness, love and joy.

The workshops are designed to emphasize the interconnection between people with the themes of trust, playfulness, and communication. This creates a playful atmosphere in which one can not only explore their courage through intrepid movement but also receive and give stretches that are very healing to the body and in the process break down barriers with others and establish more trust and connection.  The room will not be hot!

Welcome Matt Mulholland!

As we bid a fond farewell to Massage Therapist Jocelyn Bowers and wish her the best of luck with her new endeavors, we are happy to welcome to Bikram Yoga Sandy Massage Therapist Matt Mulholland.

MulhollandMatthew Mulholland has more than 12 years experience, specializing in Thai Yoga Bodywork and Deep Tissue Massage. As a Bikram student while living in Miami Beach, he provided his healing arts at two studios in the area, helping to augment and deepen the practice of many fellow students. He looks forward to doing the same here in Sandy. Matthew believes, as does Bikram, that regular bodywork is an excellent complement to the practice of Yoga. He recently moved to UT from NY State and is hoping we get a lot more snow soon.
