Announcing the 2012 Spirit of Youth Award Winners

Twenty-two teens and youth groups from around the state will be recognized at the 14th annual Spirit of Youth Awards Banquet. This year's Spirit of Youth award recipients come from 16 communities across Alaska (check out the map below!) and are being recognized for everything from acting to performing CPR to speaking out against domestic violence.

The evening begins at 6 p.m. with youth musicians and a silent auction of youth photography and continues with a dinner recognizing these 22 deserving teens and youth groups.

Nordstrom $10,000 College Scholarship-Apply now

Nordstrom is awarding $10,000 scholarships to 80 outstanding high school students and help them achieve their dreams of going to college. The Nordstrom Scholarship recognizes students across the country for their academic achievement and community involvement.

  

To be eligible you must: 

  • Have at least a 2.7 GPA (based on a 4.0 scale) throughout high school.
  • Volunteer or participate in community services or extracurricular activities.
  • Plan on attending an accredited four-year college or university during the four years over which the scholarship is distributed. The scholarship is paid out in equal installments of $2,500.
  • Plan on applying for financial assistance in order to attend college
  • Live in a participating state (Alaska!)
  •

     Internships available with Alaska Youth for Environmental Action

    AYEA is currently looking for volunteer interns to lead a variety of projects in 2012. Opportunities to learn more about community organizing, navigating the political system, event planning, communication, and/or fundraising are available. In addition, AYEA is teaming up with First Alaskans Institute to offer one paid internship.

    AYEA is a youth leadership and civic engagement program for high school students from across Alaska to build skills and take action on issues they care about. AYEA hosts youth leadership summits focused on project planning, community organizing, and political action, and supports youth-led projects throughout the school year. 
    Nominate a Young Volunteer for the Gloria Barron Prize

    The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes invites nominations for its 2012 awards. The Barron Prize, founded by author T.A. Barron in honor of his mother, celebrates outstanding young leaders ages 8 to 18. Each year, the Barron Prize honors inspiring young people who have made a significant positive difference to people and our planet. Ten winners each receive $2,500 to support their service work or higher education.     Nominations open for the 2012 Conservation Achievement Awards

    honors individuals and organizations whose exceptional contributions have made an enduring mark on Alaska's natural environment and the ways of life it sustains. In September 2012, awards will be presented in eight categories, including the Denny Wilcher Award for Young Environmental Activists.

     

     

    Do you know an Alaska high school senior making significant contributions to environmental challenges in his/her community? Show your appreciation for their efforts and nominate them for the Wilcher Award today. The young activist will receive a $500 cash prize to assist them in their future endeavors.

    Anchorage's Promise $1,000 scholarship open to Alaskan youth

    Anchorage's Promise is pleased to announce the Scholarship of Promise applications are now available. This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to an individual or youth under the age of 21 planning to continue their education for post secondary or vocational training on the basis of community/volunteer activities, leadership and financial need.

     

    The Scholarship of Promise was established in 2011 to recognize the outstanding work and commitment to service by former Executive Director, Debbie Bogart and will be used to assist Alaskan youth with their dreams of a higher education.     Young Native Writers Essay Contest-Scholarship Opportunity

    The Young Native Writers Essay Contest is a writing contest for Native American high school students and is designed to encourage young Native Americans to think about the critical issues impacting their tribal communities today. 

     

    High school students responding to this year's writing contest should write an essay of no more than 1,200 words that addresses the following prompt: "Describe a crucial issue confronting your tribal community today. Explain how you hope to help your tribal community respond to this challenge and improve its future."

     

    Five 1st Place Winners will each receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., the week of July 8-14, 2012 to visit the National Museum of the American Indian and other prominent sites.
    In addition, each 1st Place Winner will receive a scholarship of $2,500 to be paid directly to the college or university of his or her choice.

    Spirit of Youth is dedicated to creating, promoting and recognizing youth involvement in communities across Alaska. 

     

    Each year, over 150 youth are nominated for the Spirit of Youth Award.  Nominations are made by anyone who wishes to recognize a hard-working, inspiring teenager or youth group in one of 11 award categories.  

     

    Spirit of Youth is governed by a board of directors and the Teen Advisory Council.
