Here Comes the Fun

Summer is just around the bend and we don't know about you guys, but we are so ready to put in some serious beach time! Of course when your headquarters is just two blocks from the coast...

Over here at Anatometal, we are getting ready not only for warm weather fun, but for our biggest trade show of the year; APP! Will we see you there?  Be sure to stop by our booth and say hello! We love meeting new friends and of course, catching up with the old; one is silver and the others gold... Speaking of, we will have some serious show stoppers making their debut at the convention. Don't worry if you won't be there to see them in person, we will have them up on our Facebook page and Tumblr shortly after we return to Santa Cruz.

We are also getting ready to celebrate the first annual, International Body Piercing Day! We thought, if Zombie Preparedness can have a month, why can't body piercing have a day!? International Body Piercing Day is all about promoting safety, awareness, and having fun! We have stickers in the works, and lots of shops all over the globe are signing up to participate. As individuals, there is no reason you can't join in too!  The event will take place on June 28th.

Do any of you know why we chose that date? We figured, what better way to honor the man who helped bring piercing into modern popular culture, than to have a day all about piercing on his birthday! That's right, June 28th is Jim Ward's b-day!  To keep up on all things I.B.P.D., just follow the link above and tell your friends! We think it would be great to have this event grow year after year. Don't you agree?

Meet Anatometal

MaribelleWe know
how much you love your Anatometal and what it stands for: handcrafted right here in the USA, made with only the highest quality  materials. There is so much that goes into each piece as it moves from our machine shop, to the polishing room, to the gold room, through quality assurance, packaging, and to our shipping department. We thought you would like to get to know the people who make that Gemmed Eyelet, Heart Navel Curve, and Nostril Screw possible! In the coming months, we will be invading all the departments here at Anatometal Headquarters and bringing our hard workers right to you!
This month we bring you...

From Quality Assurance
, Maribel!

Anatometal:
What do you do here at Anatometal?
Maribel: I am the quality assurance person, I make sure everything that goes out is good enough to be called Anatometal. I can also assemble, anodize, polish, and steam. The only things I don't know how to do are set stones or run the mills.

Anatometal: How long have you worked for Anatometal?
Maribel: A little over 4 years.

Anatometal: What is your favorite piece that Anatometal makes?
Maribel: 4ga Niobium Captive Rings, anodized black with rubber balls. I also like our classic Gemmed Eyelets, and the Sinflower Plugs.

Anatometal: Tell us 3 things about yourself.
Maribel: I'm a F***king A****le *laughs* but no really, I'm a Scorpio who doesn't like people. I was born and raised in Santa Cruz, in fact I think I am the only native here at Anatometal, everyone else is a transplant from another city or state. I'm a newly wed, my wife and I were recently married; less then a year ago.

Anatometal:
Ninjas or Pirates?
Maribel: Ninjas, definitely. I have always wanted to learn how to throw ninja stars, I have a good arm but my aim is off...

Thanks for letting us get to know you a bit Maribel! Who will be featured next month? Be sure to check back to find out!
What is the APP?

We realized recently that we often mention the APP in our articles here, but have never stopped to talk about what they are, and what they do. Since we are packing up our trailers and heading out to the biggest trade show of our year (the annual APP conference and exposition), we thought it would be perfect time to talk a little about said organization.APP

APP stands for The Association of Professional Piercers. They are a non-profit group specializing in health, safety, and the dissemination of information about body piercing. The APP is governed by a voluntary elected Board of Directors. Their members are group of piercing professionals that freely share information to help all sorts of people like fellow members, piercers, health care professionals, legislators, health inspectors, and the general public get the best and most up-to-date information about body piercing.

In the early nineties, a group of piercing studio owners and health professionals realized the need for an organization that could educate piercers and pierces alike. What started as meetings in coffee shops and at The Gauntlet Corp. offices, slowly but surely evolved into what the Association of Professional Piercers is today.

CoursesAnatometal has been involved with the APP since the organization was formed. We were invited in as consultants on subjects such as materials, procedures, and manufacturing. In fact, we helped develop the standards on metals like ASTM F-138 stainless steel and ASTM F-136 titanium for initial piercings that the APP still holds today. At the very first annual conference and exposition, Anatometal led the round table for manufactures of jewelry. It was at this round table that the industry standard for threading on jewelry was developed. Members of our staff also lead a class introducing the body piercing world to OSHA; a very important safety organization that oversees workers rights.

The annual APP conference has become a tradition for many people in the piercing industry. It's an event where we can catch up with friends, make new connections, and
APP founders

The Founders: Irwin Kane, Raelyn Gallina, Vaughn, Michaela Grey& Jim Ward, Melisa Kaye, Richard White, Joann Wyman, Elizabeth, Drew Ward, Blake Perlingeri, Kristian.

attend all sorts of informational  courses (surely you have seen many of your favorite jewelry companies counting down the days on their respective Facebook/Tumblr pages). It is however industry only; the good news is that you can find all sorts of helpful information about new piercings and safety standards. You can also locate members and all other sorts of important tips on their main website: http://www.safepiercing.org/ .

The next time you find yourself with questions about stretching, piercing, or just want to educate yourself a little more on industry news, hop on over to the APP website. It really pays off in the long run to be on top of important issues like what it is you are putting in your body! As the first corporate member of the Association of Professional Piercers, we put in many hours researching procedures, materials and all sorts of other safety measures to insure piercing studios have the best and most current information on, as well as access to the best tools out there. We aren't just talking jewelry either; we mean needles, polish for jewelry, materials, etc. We are proud to be members of the APP and look forward to watching it grow as the years go on!
Ask a Piercer

The Question:

My bf has the start of a Jacobs ladder, how long does it take to heal? His bar came out the other night so he waited till the next day to put it back in. But had to pretty much force it back in. He got it about 3 months ago. I just think it should be healed.

The Answer:

 - Due to the amount of blood in the area, genital piercings do tend to heal a bit quicker than other areas of the body, but they can also appear to be fully healed before they actually are; frenum piercings are no exception.

 - A good rule of thumb is that most piercings may be healed inside of 3-6 months (depending on the location of the piercing as well as other factors), but will not be well healed until over the one year mark.

 - In the case of your boyfriend's piercing, the short answer is, the piercing may be healed, but not healed enough to leave the jewelry out for any amount of time; a piercing will generally still begin to shrink in size once the jewelry has been removed. This would account for the fact that the jewelry had to be forced back in.

 - In the future, if the jewelry comes out, take the time to visit the piercer doing your boyfriends frenum ladder and have them insert the jewelry. Using a taper to insert jewelry that has fallen out makes things a little more comfortable than simply shoving it back in ;)
