That wasn't a snow blower you just heard was it? It couldn't have been. All the leaves haven't fallen yet and Halloween is still a long way off. There it is again. Sounds like your neighbor is getting ready for winter already. That might not be a bad idea. It wouldn't hurt to take care of a few things over the next couple of weeks before the cold weather arrives. We hope our list of fall reminders will get you ahead of the game when it comes to preparing for another Minnesota winter.
- Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Make sure the batteries are working and that the sensors are still viable.
- If you're planning to outdo your exterior Christmas lighting display from last year, the fall is a great time to have those additional outlets installed.
- Clean your chimney so it's ready for your first fire of the season. Most professional chimney sweeps
 | | It's That Time of Year | recommend you clean the chimney after 50-70 fires. - Put your snow blower through a dry run. Make sure everything is working properly before you actually need it.
- Empty all the left over fuel from your lawn mower and leaf blower at the end of the season. Leaving the fuel in the equipment throughout the winter can damage components and could cause costly repairs in the spring.
- Make sure to have a qualified company inspect and clean your furnace or boiler. These heating tune ups should always include a flue gas analysis to make sure the system is burning safely and efficiently.
- During the fall months your grass roots grow deeper to get ready for the long winter ahead. Fall is a great time to apply fertilizer.
- If you have a sprinkler system for your lawn, make sure to call your maintenance company to come and blow out the system to avoid frozen pipes and damage to the system during the winter.
- Disconnect your garden hoses from the exterior faucets, shut off the water supply and drain the lines.
- Clean your gutters and inspect your roof. Replace any damaged shingles and check roof flashings to ensure they are water tight.
Sure it might look like a lot to do but if you get started now you won't be doing a lot of this during the first snowfall (like I did last year). Good luck! |

An Apple a Day
Someone once told me that an apple is more efficient than caffeine for waking you up in the morning. For a coffee fan like me that's a bit hard to believe but I'm sure I'd feel better eating an apple instead of dropping $5 at Caribou on the way to work.
 | | A Good Weekend Outing |
If you're an apple fan, have kids and need something for them to do or just want to kill some time on a nice fall day, I recommend you take a look at some of these apple orchards we've found for you at Orange Pippin Orchards.
You can get some great food, fresh air and a little exercise while you're at it. Enjoy the crisp fall air while you can!

Too Good to be True Sure I like apples but I'm more of a caramel and cheesecake guy. Put the three together? Sounds like a pretty good combo. The Food Network has done just that and has come up with a great caramel apple cheesecake recipe. It's quick and easy and sure to please. | | Caramel Apple Cheesecake-Food Network |
