Delhaize Fourth-Quarter Net Beats Estimates on Cost Savings

Delhaize Group SA, the owner of the U.S. Food Lion supermarkets, reported fourth-quarter profit that beat analyst estimates as cost savings and improved buying terms in Belgium and Greece exceeded the impact of U.S. price cuts. Net income climbed to 190 million euros ($263 million) from 132 million euros a year earlier.

M&S Most Sustainable Store to Open

Marks & Spencer is opening its most sustainable UK store next month.The Simply Food Store is in Sheffield and will be the first of a number of planned 'Sustainable Learning' stores. The stores will be zero carbon in the construction and will be made from 100% recycled material. The opening will be followed by 2 more M&S sustainable learning stores - Stratford City in late 2011 and Cheshire Oaks in 2012.

Dixons Retail Continues Office Depot Partnership

Shoplifter Unwittingly Offers Theft Tips to Loss Prevention Officer
  
A Loss Prevention Officer (LPO) inside Sears observed a man acting suspiciously. The LPO subsequently moved closer in an effort to get a better vantage point of the man's activities. The LPO began to browse a display of memory cards, pretending to be another customer. Unexpectedly, the suspect approached the LPO, pulled out a knife, and cut the security device off of the memory card the LPO had been holding. He explained to the LPO that he could now remove the item from the store without detection. The man then proceeded to push a cart full of power tools out of the store without paying for them.
