Stein Mart, Inc. Reports Fourth Quarter and Fiscal Year 2010 Financial Results

Net income for the fourth quarter was $18.8 million compared to net income of $2.7 million in 2009. For the year, net income was $48.8 million compared to net income of $23.6 million in 2009. Two new stores were opened, five were closed and five were relocated in 2010. The company operated 264 Stein Mart stores at year-end compared to 267 at the end of 2009. "Our focus in 2011 is increasing sales by attracting more customers and building our share of their spending," commented Stovall.

Jo-Ann Stores Inc. Reports Higher Fourth-Quarter Earnings

Jo-Ann Stores Inc. has reported improved fourth-quarter results compared to the like period a year earlier. The fabric and craft retailer said its net income in the quarter that ended Jan. 29 rose 9%, to $40.4 million from $37.1 million. Sales at Jo-Ann edged up 3.6%, to $624.1 million from $602.2 million. "Jo-Ann Stores achieved another quarter of strong performance to end a year of significant growth in fiscal 2011," said Darrell Webb, chairman and CEO.

Wal-Mart Plans to Add "Hundreds" of Smaller-Format Stores

Executives with Wal-Mart Stores Inc. of Bentonville told attendees at an investor conference in New York that it plans to open 30-40 smaller stores this year in rural and urban areas. In all, the retailer, which has reported falling same-store sales at its U.S. discount stores, plans to add "hundreds" of smaller-format stores over the next three years. The report also said Wal-Mart plans to building its first "Express" stores, which are less than one-tenth the size of its average supercenter, next week in northwest Arkansas. Its first urban Express center is planned for Chicago's South Side.

Walgreens Sells Its Pharmacy-Benefit Unit

Walgreen Co. is selling its pharmacy benefit management business, as the Deerfield-based drugstore giant pushes to get consumers to the pharmacy counter and away from mail order. The nation's largest drugstore chain said that it will sell Walgreens Health Initiatives for $525 million in cash to Catalyst Health Solutions Inc. Walgreens and other retailers are working hard to increase foot traffic into their stores by adding medical services such as vaccinations and primary care from nurse practitioners.

ECOtality Teams Up with Fred Meyer

Electric car-charging company ECOtality announced it will partner with the Fred Meyer grocery chain to install its Blink electric vehicle chargers at select stores in Oregon and Washington. Fred Meyer joins BP, Best Buy, and Cracker Barrel as corporate partners to San Francisco-based ECOtality, which is in the process of rolling out 1,100 public chargers in Portland, Salem and Eugene. The Fred Meyer store on Hawthorne in Southeast Portland, already has a place for electric cars to plug in.

Fresh & Easy Debuts 27 Exclusive California Wines

Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market added 27 exclusive California wines to its existing lineup. The new wines are sourced from vineyards in California's premium wine-growing regions including Napa Valley, Sonoma, Monterey and Santa Barbara, reported the company. They are priced from $3.99 to $19.99 and broken into seven new lines: I Heart CA, Wink, Pacific Coast Highway, Cloud Valley, WineWrights, Barrel Ranch and Open Field.

Bergendahl to Expand Food Retail Business

Swedish trading house Bergendahl & Son has announced plans to start an "aggressive" drive to expand its food retailing operations with the launch of a new chain. Bergendahl's food operations consist of fully-owned wholesale outlets that serve independent retailers. The performance of Bergendahls Food is continuing "according to plan", with the opening of the 31st Citygross. However, the group's board announced that it would now develop a new franchised chain that "combines the advantages of wholesale and retail".

BİM Reports Strong FY Sales

Discount grocer BİM has reported strong sales growth for 2010, adding it is now the market leader in the domestic sector. The chain said that sales surged up 24% to 6.57 lira last year. BIM said it increased its sales area by 15% during the year, and now operates 3,009 outlets across Turkey. The growth far outstrips that of the wider market, with overall retail sales in Turkey rising by 4% last year. Looking ahead, BIM said it plans to invest 200m lira this year to open 350 new outlets. It also wants to open 40 stores in Morocco, where it currently has 44 outlets operational.

Clas Ohlson has Strong Q3

The Clas Ohlson chain has reported a mixed set of results for its fiscal third quarter, and said it will continue to expand its store network. For the three months to end-January, operating profit was down 6.9% to SEK270m (€30.6m), but sales rose by 10% to SEK1.91bn (€216m). Clas Ohlson added that its fourth quarter has started positively, with sales up 14% in local currency terms. It also said that in the next fiscal year, it plans to open 17-22 new stores, with one to four stores in the UK.

Profits Up 13% at Morrisons, Reveals Online Grocery and Convenience Plans

Morrisons announced plans to launch an online grocery shopping operation within two years in a move to catch up with its rivals. The group said that Morrisons.com would offer grocery and non-food products but would take time to build from scratch. As part of its online development, Morrisons - the only one of the 'Big Four' grocers not to have a significant internet business - revealed it had invested £32m in a New York-based online grocer. Morrisons also revealed it would open three convenience stores, around 3,000 sq. ft. in size, in July under the name 'M Local'.

Stolen Groceries Leads to Assault

A Rotterdam man is charged with stealing over $500 in groceries from the Malta Price Chopper and assaulting security personnel who tried to stop him. Store security observed the man load up a grocery cart with $559 worth of food and attempt to leave the store without paying.  The man was confronted by security and he attempted to flee when they tried to detain him. A struggle ensued and two more store security personnel plus one shopper joined the struggle and were finally able to subdue and detain the man.
