BJ's Wholesale Confirms Looking to Sell

BJ's Wholesale Club, the third-largest warehouse club chain in the US, has confirmed that it is considering a full sale. The company was responding to media reports, and said it will "explore and evaluate strategic alternatives, including a possible sale of the company".

Health Care Going Retail with 500 CVS Offices

A new MinuteClinic inside Belmont's CVS is one of 500 new offices the company plans to open by the end of 2015.  Those will more than double the clinics in the U.S., bringing the total number of the CVS-based offices to around 1,050 nationwide.  And that's in addition to other in-store clinics at retailers such as Target, Walgreens, Walmart and, in other parts of the South, Winn-Dixie.

CVS Caremark Reports 2010 Fourth Quarter and Full Year Results

Net revenues for the three months ended December 31, 2010, decreased 4.1% or $1.0 billion to $24.8 billion, down from $25.8 billion in the three months ended December 31, 2009. For the year ended December 31, 2010, total revenue decreased 2.3% or $2.3 billion to $96.4 billion, compared to $98.7 billion for the year ended December 31, 2009.

Sport Chalet Loss Narrows in Fiscal Third Quarter

Sporting-goods chain Sport Chalet Inc. reported a narrower fiscal third-quarter loss and said total sales increased slightly, reflecting an improvement in its online and team sales divisions.  The La Canada Flintridge retailer posted a $0.9-million loss for the three months ended Dec. 26 compared with a loss of $3.8 million in the same period a year earlier. Sales rose 0.6% to $95.8 million.

Jo-Ann Stores Announces Fourth Quarter Sales Results

Jo-Ann Stores, Inc. reported that net sales for the fourth quarter ended January 29, 2011, increased 3.6% to $624.1 million compared to $602.2 million for the same period last year. Customer transactions increased 1.1% and average ticket increased 0.9%. Large-format store net sales for the quarter increased 1.8% to $330.6 million compared to the same period last year. Small-format store net sales increased 4.6% to $277.6 million compared to the same period last year.

Harris-Teeter Q1 Earnings Jump on Sales

Strong sales increases at Harris-Teeter stores helped Ruddick Corp. post a 60.7% improvement in net earnings during the fiscal first quarter that ended Jan. 2.  Ruddick posted net income of $38.1 million on total sales of $1.11 billion. Sales at Harris Teeter increased 6.2% to $1.03 billion. Harris Teeter's performance was driven by new stores, as well as increased in customer loyalty and store visits resulting from lower everyday prices and increased promotions.

Dick's Sporting Goods to Expand Throughout Maryland with 14 Locations

Coraopolis, Pa.-based Dick's Sporting Goods Inc. plans to open 14 new locations throughout Maryland, with hopes to eventually operate 900 locations nationwide, including 34 projected store openings in 2011. The new Dick's Sporting Goods locations will average approximately 50,000 sq. ft. and will offer sporting goods equipment, apparel and footwear in a specialty store environment.

Ultimate Electronics Files for Chapter 11 Protection

Ultimate Electronics Inc., the operator of 46 home-entertainment and electronics stores, filed for bankruptcy citing decreased sales at certain locations and refusal of some suppliers to ship goods on credit. In Chapter 11 papers, the company listed both assets and debt in the range of $100 million to $500 million. An affiliate, CC Retail LLC, also sought protection. Ultimate, based in Thornton, Colorado, plans to use Chapter 11 to streamline operations, close "underperforming locations," negotiate more favorable leases and improve the profitability.

Huge New Hypermarket in San Pedro Offers the 'Total Shopping Experience'

At 4,500 sq m, it's Shopwise's biggest branch to date, and president Donnie Tantoco hopes to make the 'chore' of shopping 'efficient and enjoyable again.'  Tantoco hopes to double the number of Shopwise branches to 18 in the next two to three years. Before the year is over, Shopwise will open in Cebu, its first store outside Luzon.

Ocado Posts First Profit Since Going Public

Online grocery Ocado Plc has defied industry predictions and posted its first profit since going public.  The supermarket said it would look to rival industry heavyweights like Sainsbury's and Tesco as it aggressively steps up its campaign to provide quality service and a wide variety of branded and own-label goods.  Year-on-year sales for online grocery shopping have risen 15 per cent, but still the sector only makes up three to four billion pounds in the 150-billion pound market.

Landmark Group Opens Its First Spar Hypermarket in Northern India

Dubai-based Landmark Group has opened its first Spar hypermarket in northern India, with the inauguration of a 74,000 sq ft store in Delhi. The opening of the new store at Pacific Mall in west Delhi brings the total number of Spar hypermarkets in India to four. By the end of fiscal 2012 the chain aims to have 15 hypermarkets in operation across cities such as Chandigarh, Raipur, Noida and Ghaziabad.

Women Busted Carting $1,700 in Stolen Items Out of Watertown Target

 Two women were arrested after they tried to cart more than $1,700 worth of stolen merchandise out of a Watertown Target store.  Police responded to a Target on Arsenal Street where security officers had detained two young women, after they reportedly saw them putting merchandise into Target bags and wheeling them away in two shopping carts.  According to reports, they waited by the Watertown Mall exit and waited until they thought no one was looking before they pushed the carts out of the store. One woman was arrested and charged with larceny over $250. She reportedly had 56 items worth $1,010.08 in her shopping cart. The other was also arrested and charged with larceny over $250. She reportedly had 44 items worth $757.63 in her shopping cart.
