Macy's Next Modern Move

Macy's announces yet another big step in a mission to attract the contemporary market set.  On February 10, the brand will launch a first-ever, five-week pop-up concept, Bar III, at 156 Fifth Avenue in the Flatiron District.  Additionally, "Impulse" contemporary departments will increase from 200 to 220 nationwide (with a projected 400 within the next few years) and cutting edge designers that will continue to keep the label roster fresh and compelling.

Product Exchange Program Back at Toys"R"Us

If ever there were a case of turning lemons into lemonade, the Toys"R"Us exchange program is it. Billed as the "Great Trade-In" event, the program is positioned as a child safety initiative that enables customers to bring in used products in exchange for a 25% discount on a new item.  The trade in program begins Friday, Jan. 28 and continues through Monday, Feb. 21 at Babies"R"Us and Toys"R"Us locations nationwide.

Supervalu to Close 29 Stores, Eliminate 350 Jobs

Supervalu Inc. announced this week plans to close more than two dozen grocery stores throughout the country.  The company says its closing 29 stores in the United States (mostly on the east coast). A spokesperson said that no Albertsons stores in Idaho are affected.  On the corporate front, the company also announced plans to eliminate 350 jobs from now until the end of May.

Walgreen's Moving More Heavily into Private-Label

The Deerfield-based drugstore giant has been moving more heavily into private-label since acquiring the New York-based Duane Reade chain last year. Walgreen now sells a selection of snack foods under the Delish label. Months after restocking alcohol on its shelves following a 15-year dry spell, Walgreen Co. is offering a private-label beer.  Walgreen executives also said they are planning to ramp up private-label personal-care items in the near future.

Jeronimo Martins Plans Poland Grocery Chain Investment

Jeronimo Martins will invest 1.5 billion zloty ($530 million) in its Polish discount grocery chain this year.  The Portuguese retailer, branded as Biedronka in Poland, will open 200 new stores and two distribution centers, creating more than 2,500 jobs.

Beales Narrows Losses by a Third

Beales, the independent department store chain, has reduced its full year losses for the third year running.  In the 52 weeks to October 30, losses before tax dropped 32% to �670,000.  Gross sales, which include concessions sales and VAT, increased by 2.7% to �87.25m. Group sales were up 2.1% at �48.6m. Like-for-like sales dropped 2.1%.

Supermarket Operators Shop Till Drop in SE Asia Battle

A battle between large supermarket operators to tap into Southeast Asia's growing consumer wealth could trigger more acquisitions, with Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines seen as the next hot spots.  The competition is set to pit global giants such as Tesco and Wal-Mart against Asian players like South Korea's Lotte and Japan's Aeon Co Ltd, as they strive to win a bigger share of superstores in the region.

State police say a woman and her boyfriend stole more than $450 in food from the Stop & Shop. police say the woman and man stole two carts full of food from the grocery store. In the man's cart, police found $132.94 in groceries. In the woman's there was $327.07 worth.
