Target to Open 21 New Stores in 13 States in 2011Target Corp. plans to open 21 new stores in 13 states this year as it looks to become customers' one-stop shopping choice. The retailer based in Minneapolis said that it will open six stores on March 6 in states including California, Colorado, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Kentucky and Massachusetts. Another nine stores will open on July 24 and on October 9 Target will open the remaining six stores.

Nordstrom Rack to Open First Kansas StoreSeattle-based Nordstrom, Inc. announced plans to open its first Nordstrom Rack in Kansas. The 34,925-square-foot store will be located in Lenexa at the Orchard Corners shopping center and is expected to open in fall 2011.

Roundy's to Open Three Illinois Stores in 2011Roundy's Supermarkets Inc. plans to open three Mariano's Fresh Markets in 2011 after introducing the concept with its Arlington Heights, Ill., store in 2010. Milwaukee-based Roundy's is rolling out the chain in northern Illinois. The company has confirmed intentions to open Mariano's stores in Vernon Hills and five Chicago neighborhoods.

Whole Foods Launches Health ProgramAustin-based Whole Foods Market Inc. launched a prepared foods department to go along with a new "Health Starts Here" program. The program will be offered from the organic and natural foods grocer's 303 stores and through an online information center. The initiative is meant to offer customers products, education, tools and wellness resources to promote healthy lifestyles.

Supervalu Disappoints With Q3 ResultsSupervalu Inc has missed profit forecasts with its third-quarter results, and further disappointed the market after it lowered its full-year forecast. For the three months, sales were down 7.7% to $8.6bn, with like-for-like sales down by 4.9%. Supervalu also reported a net loss of $202m (95 cents a share), compared to a profit of $109m last year, due to one-off charges. The third-largest grocery chain in the US had embarked on a strategy of new price cuts to lure back customers.

Magnit Sales Surge In 2010Magnit has put up strong sales growth figures for 2010, helped by the expansion of its store network and a recovery in consumer spending. For the year, sales jumped up a better-than-expected 39.2% to 236bn roubles (€5.96bn), with like-for-like sales up by 9.2%. The chain continued to expand during the year, and ended 2010 with 4,055 stores operating across Russia.

Winter Freeze Hits Metro Q4 SalesThe freezing conditions in December hurt the Metro Group's fourth-quarter sales figures, despite a boost from currency gains and growth outside its home market. For the three months to end-December, sales were up 1.6% to €19.7bn, missing analyst expectations of a 4.1% growth. For the full year, sales were up 2.6% to €67.3bn. Sales were down by 2.6% in Germany, but they grew by 0.7% in Western Europe, 6.9% in Eastern Europe, and surged up 29% in the Asia-Africa region.

Shoprite Sees Growth in H1 SalesShoprite Holdings, Africa's largest retailer, has reported solid results for its fiscal first half, as consumer spending grew on the back of a cautious economic recovery. For the six months to end-December, turnover was up 9.5% to 36.3bn rand, with like-for-like sales up by 2.8%. Its domestic unit saw sales grow by 8.4%, while international sales were up a more modest 3%, hurt by currency swings.

Mom Had Son Do Shoplifting
A woman was ticketed at Walmart after allegedly orchestrating a theft with her juvenile son and then trying to pin the blame on him when they were caught. Police were called to the store after employees noticed the woman placing identical items in two carts. An employee said this practice is common for shoplifters who purchase one cart of items and use the receipt to retrieve the second cart of unpaid-for items. After purchasing the items in the first cart, the woman gave the receipt to her son, who returned to retrieve the second cart. Portage Daily Register |
