Plant a MileWe need 15 to 20 volunteers for the potatoe harvest on Wednesday, August 1!
Can you help?

We're set to harvest potatoes and possibly other produce on Wednesday, August 1 at the Rinehart Family Farm northwest of Boone, Ia.

We'll plan to leave at 8 a.m. from the DMARC Food Pantry Warehouse, 3816 36th St., Des Moines, and return before 3 p.m. The MovetheFood.org truck will be going to haul the harvested produce.  The plan is to be in the field by about 9:30 a.m. and work to harvest the potatoes and the rest of the produce. Before we return, we'll share a potluck meal and be on the road again by about 1:30 p.m. We'll unload the truck at the warehouse when we return to Des Moines and should be done by 3 p.m.

We need 15 to 20 volunteers. They will need to bring a food item to share for the potluck lunch. Transportation will be by car pool, so some volunteers will need to drive.

Volunteers are from DMARC, Buy Fresh, Buy Local - Drake University, and Kitchen Collage. To volunteer, contact Drake's State Food Policy Project Coordinator Matt Russell at 515-271-4956 or

matt.russell@drake.edu.

Who we are?

The Des Moines Area Religious Council is an interfaith organization with a core membership of about 140 congregations from four faith traditions. Recipient of the 2010 Aurora Award from the Des Moines Register, DMARC provides a common means of responding to basic human needs and a context for interfaith dialogue.

The DMARC Food Pantry Network consists of 12 separate pantry sites, a centralized warehouse, and numerous community partners. It is the largest food pantry network in Iowa. Pantry sites are located in West Des Moines, Ankeny, Johnston, Urbandale, and eight sites in Des Moines. In 2010, the DMARC Food Pantry Network assisted about 10,000 families.

MovetheFood is a DMARC-led initiative to address the entire food system in Greater Des Moines, building on more than 35 years of the Food Pantry Network, catalyzing fresh generations, and engaging new constituencies to further support a vision for a day when everyone in Polk County has enough to eat.
