African Children's Choir to perform Sunday, July 29 at Meredith Drive Reformed Church.
This choir raises global awareness of the thousands of orphaned children in Africa. A freewill offering will be taken to support the choir. Despite the tragedy they've experienced, the children share their hope and joy through song. Donations directly support the expansion of sponsorship and education programs for both the current choir children as well as the thousands of other students and children that they represent. Hunger and Resilience: AV Stories by Michael Nye
This critically acclaimed exhibit about hunger will be in Des Moines for the month of August 2012 and sponsored by the Food Bank of Iowa. An overview video is available on YouTube. This free exhibit is extremely powerful and is to build awareness about the issue of hunger affecting so many of our neighbors, family, friends and co-workers today. Back-to-School Backpack Giveaway
On August 9 and 10 at Cottage Grove Ave. Presbyterian Church. Hoping to serve 1,500 students this year so no child will need to be turned away. Donations are greatly needed. A $15 check will pay for a backpack filled with grade appropriate school supplies for one child living in poverty. Bishop's Catholic Charities Golf Classic is August 27 at Echo Valley Country Club
In Norwalk, just south of Des Moines, businesses, parish groups and individuals are all welcome to reserve a tee time for this fast-paced, fun-spiritied tournament that raises funds for Catholic Charities programs and services. The tournament begins with lunch at 11:30 a.m.followed by a 1 p.m. shot gun start. Parishes are encouraged to enter one or more teams in the "Church Challenge" to compete against other parish teams. "Don't Eat Alone"
Any widowed person is welcome to join this group which meets every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., at the Olive Garden, 3600 Westown Pkwy., West Des Moines. Volunteers needed for August 1st Buy Fresh, Buy Local Harvest, Boone, Ia.
We need 15-20 volunteers to harvest potatoes and other produce at the Rinehart Family Farm, northwest of Boone. We'll leave at 8 a.m. from the DMARC Food Pantry Warehouse and return before 3 p.m. The MovetheFood.org truck will be going to haul the harvest. The plan is to be in the field by 9:30 a.m., harvest the produce and share a potluck meal before being on the road again by 1:30 p.m. We'll unload the truck at the warehouse when we return to Des Moines. For this project, Rinehart Family Farm is providing land and raising crops during the growing season. DMARC and others recruit volunteers to plant, weed, and harvest the vegetables. Greater Des Moines BFBL (Buy Fresh, Buy Local) is paying the farmer for land, water and maintenance costs on half a mile of production. Rinehart Family Farm is donating the other half mile. Who are we?
The Des Moines Area Religious Council is an interfaith organization with a core membership of about 130 congregations from ten faith traditions. Recipient of the 2010 Aurora Award from the Des Moines Register, DMARC provides a common means of responding to basic human needs and a context for interfaith dialogue.
The DMARC Food Pantry Network consists of 12 separate pantry sites, a centralized warehouse, and numerous community partners. It is the largest food pantry network in Iowa. Pantry sites are located in West Des Moines, Ankeny, Johnston, Urbandale, and eight sites in Des Moines. In 2010, the DMARC Food Pantry Network assisted about 10,000 families.
MovetheFood is a DMARC-led initiative to address the entire food system in Greater Des Moines, building on more than 35 years of the Food Pantry Network, catalyzing fresh generations, and engaging new constituencies to further support a vision for a day when everyone in Polk County has enough to eat. |
