DMARC receives $10,000 grant from the Principal Foundation!

Summertime blues have started to set in, but the Des Moines Area Religious Council has a opportunity to beat those blues with an education series called, August Thaw 2012. Many of you will remember our January Thaw course in the past. We are bringing it back in 2013. And for two weeks in August, we'll offer a sampling of this educational series. African Children's Choir to perform Sunday July 29 at Meredith Drive Reformed Church.

This choir raises global awareness of the thousands of orphaned 

children in Africa. A freewill offering will be taken to support the choir. Despite the tragedy they've experienced, the children share their hope and joy through song. Donations directly support the expansion of sponsorship and education programs for both the current choir children as well as the thousands of other students and children that they represent. Fish Fry at Capitol Hill Christian Church

On July 28, you're invited to a fish fry at our church, 3322 E 25th, in Des Moines. The fish is free; donation of $6 for vegetable, salad, dessert and drink. Help raise funds for an upcoming Missions Trip. Dinner runs from 5-7 p.m. 

 

Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa Invite You to
The Future is YOURS!

Coming up July 27-28 is The Future is YOURS!  This event is a leadership conference focused on giving High School girls what they need to be successful in their adult lives. The event contains breakout sessions on financial literacy, setting goals, taking care of their bodies, health relationships, blogging, and the girls will have a chance to speak with women leaders in their community to get insight into careers and other opportunities. Cost is $50/person. People must be registered as Girl Scouts to attend and the cost for that is $12. Scholarships are available. Jumpstart - Back to School Health Fair

The 2012 Jumpstart will be held on Wednesday, July 18, from 1:00 to 6:30 p.m. at East High in Des Moines (East High and Charter students are welcome at 11:00 a.m.

The health fair provides services for K-12 kids including physicals, immunizations (bring records), dental screenings, lead tests, Hawk-I insurance sign-up, Iowa Food assistance sign-up and after school programming. All services are free and those students participating in a health screening receive a backpack filled with school supplies. Parent/guardian must accompany each child. Nationwide and the Food Bank of Iowa present

Hunger & Resilience: Visual & Audio Stories by Michael Nye

This critically acclaimed exhibit about hunger will be in Des Moines for the month of August 2012 and sponsored by the Food Bank of Iowa. An overview video is available on YouTube. This free exhibit is extremely powerful and is to build awareness about the issue of hunger affecting so many of our neighbors, family, friends and co-workers today. Back-to-School Backpack Giveaway

On August 9 and 10 at Cottage Grove Ave. Presbyterian Church,

they are preparing to serve 1,500 students this year with the hope that no child will need to be turned away. Donations are greatly needed. Taking Control of Your Diabetes (TCOYD) Returns!

TCOYD will be coming to Des Moines with it's all-star cast of diabetes experts for a day that will ignite motivation, offer hope and change the life of anyone with diabetes! LADOS Life after Death of Spouse

"Don't Eat Alone"

Any widowed person is welcome to join this group which meets every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., at the Olive Garden, 3600 Westown Pkwy., West Des Moines. This program is an offshoot of the LADOS (see above) support group for widowed people. For more information, contact LADOS Coordinator Connie Coy-Walker at: 515-255-2229.

 

Choices, Not Chances

We all enjoy our independence and want to be able to drive as long as possible. On Thursday, August 9th from 1-2 p.m., First United Methodist Church will be hosting a senior driving program offered by the Iowa Department of Transportation. A member of the staff of the Office of Driver Services will be giving tips to help Iowa drivers stay safe and mobile as they age. Please call the church office at 515-244-6209 to register. Attend the 2012 Bishop's Catholic Charities Golf Classic

On August 27, at Echo Valley Country Club in Norwalk just south of Des Moines, businesses, parish groups and individuals are all welcome to reserve a tee time for this fast-paced, fun-spirited tournament that raises funds for Catholic Charities programs and services. The tournament begins with lunch at 11:30 a.m., followed by a 1 p.m. shot gun start. Parishes are encouraged to enter one or more teams in the "Church Challenge" to compete against other parish teams. We need help with our farmer's market produce delivery on Saturdays from 1-3 p.m. We are also looking for help on Friday mornings 8-10 a.m. Are you able to lift 40-50 lbs. and put it in our warehouse cooler? We need your help now until October. Timberline Church offers "Faith in Action"

Every fifth Sunday (next one is July 29) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. offers free oil changes to widows, single moms, and spouses of deployed military personnel. Four-week Tai Chi Program Begins
Held at Plymouth & Westminster churches in Des Moines. Free will offering! Taught by Ruth Kneile, will include both Qigong and Tai Chi. To register, come on first night of class. Starting July 9 and 11 and 12. Check the DMARC calender to see the schedule.

Who are we?

The Des Moines Area Religious Council is an interfaith organization with a core membership of about 130 congregations from ten faith traditions. Recipient of the 2010 Aurora Award from the Des Moines Register, DMARC provides a common means of responding to basic human needs and a context for interfaith dialogue.

 

The DMARC Food Pantry Network consists of 12 separate pantry sites, a centralized warehouse, and numerous community partners. It is the largest food pantry network in Iowa. Pantry sites are located in West Des Moines, Ankeny, Johnston, Urbandale, and eight sites in Des Moines. In 2010, the DMARC Food Pantry Network assisted about 10,000 families.

 

MovetheFood is a DMARC-led initiative to address the entire food system in Greater Des Moines, building on more than 35 years of the Food Pantry Network, catalyzing fresh generations, and engaging new constituencies to further support a vision for a day when everyone in Polk County has enough to eat.
