Meals from the Market at the Downtown
Des Moines Farmers' Market Needs You!

Volunteers needed:

We need Saturday morning volunteers throughout the duration of the Downtown Des Moines Farmers Market to work the MovetheFood booth in partnership with Meals for the Market, and to help get the donations of fresh produce and other great stuff to our warehouse and partners. In 2011, the Meals from the Market Program contributed to our distribution of over 300,000 pounds of fresh produce to our 12 pantry sites, a key aspect to our focus on health. To sign up, please go to the Meals from the Market volunteer website. It's going to be a great summer at the Downtown Farmers' Market!

Beautiful Plants, Jobs for Unemployed and a Fundraiser - All in One!

Based out of St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral in Des Moines, the Community Interfaith Worm Project creates jobs for area unemployed persons through the production of worm casting "tea bags". After red worms digest organic matter they leave behind excretions called castings. Worm castings stimulate plant growth. They are packed with a balance of essential macro and micro nutrients, minerals, bacteria and enzymes needed for plant growth. Plants absorb the nutrients in the castings quickly and easily.

By soaking the "tea bags" in water, you create a rich natural liquid fertilizer for your plants. Several local churches now sell the bags on a permanent basis to their congregations. Bags are sold to individuals for $5 each; to faith groups for $3 each, with the intention that a faith group will sell the bag again for $5, making a $2 profit which goes to the ministry of their choosing. For more info, visit: http://wormproject.wordpress.com. To order, contact: Helen@communitywormproject.org.

Who are we?

The Des Moines Area Religious Council is an interfaith organization with a core membership of about 130 congregations from ten faith traditions. Recipient of the 2010 Aurora Award from the Des Moines Register, DMARC provides a common means of responding to basic human needs and a context for interfaith dialogue.

The DMARC Food Pantry Network consists of 12 separate pantry sites, a centralized warehouse, and numerous community partners. It is the largest food pantry network in Iowa. Pantry sites are located in West Des Moines, Ankeny, Johnston, Urbandale, and eight sites in Des Moines. In 2010, the DMARC Food Pantry Network assisted about 10,000 families.

MovetheFood is a DMARC-led initiative to address the entire food system in Greater Des Moines, building on more than 35 years of the Food Pantry Network, catalyzing fresh generations, and engaging new constituencies to further support a vision for a day when everyone in Polk County has enough to eat.
