President's Note

Dear NYSMEAns,

Where did the summer go?  A new school year is upon us, along with new opportunities to infuse the ocean into our classrooms and informal education programming.

The NYSMEA website is a fantastic resource for ideas and inspiration.  Eager to enjoy community resources?  Check out our recommended field trip destinations.  Ready to get students doing

Lou sSELF Program
NYSMEA Board Member Lou Siegel demonstrates water testing techniques for the sSELF program, a citizen science activity.

real science in the field?  Hook up with a citizen science project.  From counting eels to assessing water quality, there is something for everyone and every grade level.  Keeping it in the classroom for now?  Look at our lesson plans, covering a wide variety of subject areas and grades K-12 and beyond.

Another great source of inspriation will be our next Share-A-Thon, to be held on Saturday, October 13th at the New York Aquarium (mark your calendars!).  At our event last spring, educators learned everything from hydroponics to GIS tools, and walked away with plenty of resources for their diverse settings.  Have a great hands-on activity to share or want to help plan the event?  Contact Education Committee Chair Nordica Holochuk

Have a great start to the school year!

Sincerely,

Meg

Meghan Marrero, Ed.D.

Sail with NYSMEA

Tired of teaching about the wind, waves, and water, but only living it on paper? Change that by learning to sail with NYSMEA Kinghan Award winner David Stolarz.  Join David for a sunset sail on Monday, September 17th out of City Island (weather permitting).

The fee is just $5 for NYSMEA members (join or renew your membership here), and there is a six person limit, so act fast as this is a first come, first-served event.  Additional dates may be added if there is sufficient interest.  For more information or to register, contact David Stolarz.

We start with an introduction to safety, sailing basics, and move on to the interaction of tides, weather, and personal choice.

Must be physically able to move from one boat to another, and to participate in trimming sails (cranking a winch), holding the tiller on a steady course, and moving about the boat with agility during tacks.

Annual Fish-nic

Who: Join the Long Island Marine Science Association (NYSMEA's sister organization)

Where: Tobay Beach, directions below

When: SUNDAY, Sept. 23 at 1pm (rain date: Saturday, Sept. 22) Check the local forecast. If there is a suggestion of bad weather, we may want to celebrate a day earlier and miss the rain. By having it a day earlier (Saturday), prepared food will probably not go "bad."

Bring a dish from the sea and your own drinks. We will not have hot coffee or a Coleman stove. We will supply paper plates and accessories plus a number of desserts.

Bring your binoculars, kites, etc., and enjoy the balmy weather. It still may be warm enough for a swim in the bay. Or just enjoy good company!

Contact Bob Abrams at (516) 333-7830 or RDAbr@optonline.net to RSVP or for more information.

Driving directions -

We will be at the Tobay Beach oceanfront pavilion. When you enter the parking lot, go to the far-to-the-east side and park south facing the ocean and the parkway underpass. Walk through the underpass - the pavilion should be just in front of you.

From the west - take LIE, Northern or Southern State, Sunrise Highway, or Merrick to Wantagh State or Meadowbrook Pkway; go south to Jones Beach and onto Ocean Pkway. Look for signs to Tobay parking. Get into the left lane for the U-turn. Then get into the right lane and to the parking lot.

From the east - come down the Sagtikos Pkway to Robt Moses Pkway and turn west. The entrance to Tobay is on the right. In the parking lot, turn right and park at the far end.

Ripples: Call for Papers

Ripples, the Journal of the New York State Marine Education Association, is a peer-reviewed electronic journal for marine educators, students and marine enthusiasts.  The journal shares relevant educational and scientific research, formal and informal educational activities and strategies, reports on successful programs, and other topics of interest to NYSMEA members.  Since its revival in 2012, the journal is published electronically, with the current issue available only to NYSMEA members.

The next Call for Papers closes on September 30, 2012.  Please email Meghan Marrero (president@nysmea.org) with questions and to submit your manuscript.

We are looking for submissions of 3000 words or less; please submit in Microsoft Word, using standard 12 pt font, 1 inch margins, etc.  Follow APA guidelines for references, headings, etc.  To facilitate reading by a diverse audience, be sure that your article is free from overly technical language or jargon. The design/layout will change when reformatted, but make sure your file is very readable for our reviewers.  Graphs, charts and pictures are encouraged; please be sure to include captions and credits. The journal is electronic only; therefore photographs need not be high resolution.  You may include these figures directly in your manuscript draft.

Strandline (n): the high water mark; the area at the top of a beach where debris is deposited.
