President's Note

Dear NYSMEAns,

Summer is a great time for us to be enjoying what our ocean and waterways have to offer.  It's also a great time for get togethers with fellow marine-lovers.  Please consider joining us at our annual potluck picnic on August 26th in New Rochelle from 11AM - 2PM.  It's always nice to relax with members--old and new--in a waterfront atmosphere with plenty of tasty treats.  All are always welcome.  Even if you have never attended a NYSMEA event, we'd love to meet you!  RSVP to me for more information.

I am also happy to announce that

Ripples Logo

our journal, Ripples, has finally been published in its first electronic issue.  Ripples was last published in 1995!

We are very excited to get this peer-reviewed journal off the ground again.  I you did not receive Ripples, it is likely because your membership is not up to date.  The easiest way to remedy this issue is by renewing online.

This issue includes the following diverse articles:

Long Island's Fish Oddities: Seahorses and their kin
by Christopher Paparo

Whales, Whales, and More Whales
by Alexander Mildener

Ocean Literacy for All
by Meghan E. Marrero

Geospatial Learning in the Classroom: A Call for Collaboration
by David Stolarz

I hope you will consider contributing to Ripples, either as an author, reviewer, or editor in the future. Email me for more information.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Sincerely,

Meg

Whale watching trip- Aug 24th!

We've re-scheduled our trip onboard the American Princess, docked at Breezy Point, Ft Tilden, in Queens! Trip participants generally see dozens of dolphins, and for the past two weeks, have watched juvenile humpback whales lunge feeding.

Trip leaders will be giving a powerpoint program on whales, and will set up a small touch tank with some marine life from the dock. Other activities will be conducted with field scopes and plankton nets. Our cruise will be a science at sea adventure!

Join us for this NYSMEA get-together!
