_______________________ President's Address
Dear NYSMEANS,
We welcome you to get more involved in NYSMEA! There are several opportunities over the next few months with which we need your help!
1. Beneath the Sea Scuba and Travel Show. Are you a scuba diver? Do you want to be? Is this an interest of yours? We are looking for volunteers to help staff the NYSMEA booth throughout the weekend event, March 25 - 27th, 2011. In addition to helping out NYSMEA, you will get into the show for free and have access to all of the wonderful exhibitors and workshops. Learn more here, and email Dennis Bader, Education Committee Chair, who is coordinating our booth schedule.
2. Annual Conference Committee. We are working very hard to plan this year's conference, which will be held on June 4, 2011 at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn. We need volunteers to help plan this action-packed event. Lots of tasks need to be done-- from fundraising to gathering auction items, lining up speakers to day-of AV support. If you have just a little time to give, we will be very grateful for the help. If you are interested, please email Sarah Richards, our conference chair.
3. Website. As you have probably noticed, our website is a work in progress. We are still in need of web page leaders to assist. By giving just 1-2 hours a month (all from home!), you can help us to make the NYSMEA website much more comprehensive and useful to our members. Interested? Please contact our Website Committee Chair, Larissa Graham.
4. Education Committee. Most of us came to NYSMEA because we are interested in the marine environment, and teaching others about it. Our Education Committee has just re-formed and is being led by Chairman Dennis Bader. This committee is tasked with outreach, professional development, and much more. Can you help? Email Dennis Bader. I hope that you will consider becoming more active in NYSMEA. Our meetings are always open to all, so please stop by and introduce yourself! Our next meeting is Sunday, February 13th at 10:00 AM at Queens High School of Teaching. To RSVP, email Secretary Keira Lam.
Have a great February, and I hope to see you soon!

Exploring Long Island Sound
The Long Island Sound watershed (or drainage basin) is home to 8.8 million people, many of which do not know how their everyday actions are affecting this precious waterbody. Join Larissa Graham, Long Island Sound Outreach Coordinator with NY Sea Grant as she talks about the problems that are facing Long Island Sound and some creative ways that you can incorporate these topics into your curriculum. The topics covered will relate to all NY estuaries, so please feel free to sign up even if your school is not on the north shore of Long Island. Every participant will receive a packet of free materials! To participate, you need only a computer and a phone (and, of course, to be a NYSMEA member!). Sign up by clicking here and we'll send you the link and phone number to attend.
