Dear friends of NYSMEA,
Even for those of us not in school, September often brings a "New Years Resolution" type feeling. I encourage you to think about your own impacts, and what you are doing to leave a positive stamp on our ocean and the planet. Maybe it is assisting with the International Coastal Clean Up, making a pledge to eschew bottled water, or taking your kids to your local marsh for them to observe its wonders. What legacy are you leaving behind?
September is a great month to attend some NYSMEA events. Join a committee, enjoy a Hidden Harbor tour, or participate in our Beach Clean Up at Jones Beach (see our side bar for more info on all of these). Join us in making a positive impact.
Sincerely, Meg
Meghan Marrero, Ed.D. President

The Creature Corner: YOU!
| Credit: Eileen Keenan | Did you know that the biggest source of water pollution doesn't come from factories dumping waste or cities dumping garbage, but from each one of us? The biggest source of water pollution comes from the surface water washing over our driveways, parking lots and streets!? Yup, it's true-- it's called polluted stormwater or polluted runoff. Stormwater mixes with pollutants, such as fertilizers, pesticides, oil, and pet waste, that are on the hard surfaces in our neighborhood. This polluted stormwater washes into rivers or stormdrains, which in most cases, lead directly to our waterbodies, untreated! How can you help protect our marine waters? How about trying some of these simple tips:
1. Educate yourself and others with science-based information. Join NYSMEA and learn from other educators, just like you! We have lots of great Web links on our Web site, as well as various lesson plans that will allow you to teach your students about water pollution. Check it out!
2. Volunteer! There are many groups out there that can use your help protecting our marine, fresh, and brackish waters! Visit our volunteer Web page for more ideas. Why not volunteer for International Coastal Cleanup Day on Sept 25th? Visit the American Littoral Society for more info about cleanups at your favorite beach.
3. Make a change at home! The Long Island Sound Study has lots of great tips on their Web site for improving water quality. Learn what you can do around your home, lawn, and even school to protect our estuaries!
