THIS WEEK AT THE FARMERS MARKET
October 20, 2011 |
Last Market of the Season
It's hard to believe that today marks the end of the Farmers Market season here in East Boston. Although we deliver this news with slightly heavy hearts, we can't help but feel delighted at the success our relatively young market has seen over the years. This season has been the busiest and most vibrant yet, and has truly become a community hub and central meeting point for neighbors to socialize around good food!
We thank all of our partners for their support. We'd especially like to thank EBNHC Administration, East Boston WIC, and the Food Project for their financial and logistical support as well as outreach efforts. We couldn't have done it alone, and we certainly couldn't have done it without any of you!
Though the East Boston Farmers Market ends today, we'd like to highlight some opportunities for fresh, local food within Boston that will hold you over until our 2012 opening market.
If you've gotten used to Thursday as your market day, Revere Beach Farmers Market runs into next week. Their final date is Thursday, October 27, 12:00 to 6:00 pm.
Finally, Chelsea's just over the bridge, and they also run into next week. Their last market is Saturday, October 29.
Winter Farmers Markets There are two winter farmers markets in the greater Boston area that are worth a visit.
One is the Somerville Farmers Market, located at the Armory at 191 Highland Avenue, Somerville, MA. They start up Saturday November 12. Click here to follow them on Facebook. The market runs every Saturday throughout the winter.
The second is a new winter market that is slated to open Sunday January 8, 2012, in Codman Square, Dorchester. Click here for their flier and to find out more information about this exciting new endeavor. This market will run on Sundays through the winter.
It has been a pleasure sharing our market with you. See you next season, and thanks for reading!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
| |
Ribollita
Here's a great recipe for Ribollita, the delicious Italian winter stew. This recipe is a from the kitchen of the East Boston Farmers Market's very own Alison Smizer!Ingredients
- 1/2 pound dried cannellini beans (soak the night before)
- 3 tablespoons olive oil plus extra for serving if desired
- 1/4 pound pancetta, diced
- 2 cups diced onion (1 jumbo or 2 medium)*
- 3 tablespoons minced garlic (about 6 cloves)*
- 1 cup diced fennel*
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1 28-ounce can Italian plum tomatoes, drained, chopped, and juice reserved
- 4 cups chopped kale (cut ribs out, then chop)*
- 1/2 cup fresh chopped basil leaves*
- 4 cups chicken or vegetable broth, preferably homemade or low sodium
- 2 cups sourdough bread cubes, crusts removed
- 1/2 cup or more grated Parmesan cheese
*indicates you can find it at the East Boston Farmers Market
1) In a large bowl, cover the cannellini beans with cold water to cover by several inches, cover with plastic film, and refrigerate overnight. 2) Drain the beans and place them in a large pot with 8 cups of water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 45-60 minutes. Add 1 teaspoon salt and continue simmering until beans are tender, about 15 minutes longer. Set the beans aside in their liquid to cool. 3) Meanwhile, heat the oil in a 5-6 quart pot over medium-low heat. Add the pancetta and onions. Cook until onions are soft and translucent and pancetta has crisped. Add garlic, carrots, celery, fennel, salt, back and red pepper. Cook until vegetables are tender, about 7-10 minutes. Add tomatoes and reserved juice, kale, and basil, and simmer another 7-10 minutes. 4) Drain the cooled beans, reserving the liquid. Puree half of the beans with a little of the liquid in a food processor fitted with the steel blade. Add bean puree to the pot with the vegetables, then add the remaining whole beans. 5) Add any remaining bean liquid to a large measuring cup and add enough broth to measure 4 cups. Add to the soup and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer for about 20 minutes. Add bread cubes and simmer another 10 minutes. Taste for seasoning and serve, sprinkled with Parmesan cheese. Drizzle with a little more olive oil if desired. Enjoy! |
