THIS WEEK AT THE FARMERS MARKET
October 13, 2011
Do you have what it takes to become the next Master Chef?

Listen up, food enthusiasts!

The hit television show Master Chef is on the search for participants for its upcoming third season, and they're doing a casting call in Boston!

The show's casting producer recently contacted us because they've had lots of success reaching out to farmers markets. This could be your big break! The casting is open to anyone who is 18 years and older and doesn't cook professionally.

Check out www.masterchefcasting.com for more information about how to apply.

And don't let that rain keep you from our market today! We are on, rain or shine! See you there!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
Red Rice with Peas and Carrots

red rice
This recipe comes from Healthy Latino Cooking / Cocina Latina, a healthy cookbook created by the Let's Get Movin' staff at EBNHC. Ask Ali how you get can your copy!

Ingredients:
2 cups vegetable stock
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 small onion, chopped*
2 large garlic cloves, minced*
1 carrot, chopped*
1 cup long-grain rice
3/4 cup pureed tomato
kernels from 1 ear of corn*
1 cup peas
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro or parsley* (optional)

 * Indicates you can find it at the East Boston Farmers Market

Directions:
1.  Heat the vegetable stock in a saucepan. Bring it to a simmer over medium heat.

2.  In another large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic, carrot, and long-grain rice. Cook for about five minutes, until the rice and onion begin to brown slightly.

3.  Stir in the pureed tomato and cook for one minute.

4. Add the vegetable stock, corn, peas, and salt and return to a simmer. Simmer until the liquid has been absorbed (about 15 minutes). Stir in the fresh herbs. Serve and enjoy!
