CWIC releases report: Where Are the Jobs in Chicago?

This month, CWIC analyzed roughly 130,000 recent postings pulled from internet job boards over the last 90 days to develop an understanding of current job demand and employer needs in Chicago.  View the report.

CWIC will update this report quarterly and will use the information to inform the Workforce Investment Board, front-line workers in job training and placement centers, and our other workforce partner agencies.

CWIC adviser to be named President of Harold Washington College

CWIC is pleased to congratulate Don Laackman of the Civic Consulting Alliance (CCA) on his upcoming appointment as the next President of Harold Washington College, the downtown campus of the Chicago City Colleges (CCC) system.

Mr. Laackman led the team at CCA that provided pro bono support and staff to Mayor Daley's Chicago LEADS initiative, the precursor to CWIC.  "When the Mayor decided to make the LEADS work permanent and create CWIC, Don was instrumental in designing and launching the organization.  He has provided invaluable strategic planning advice to us ever since.  We anticipate continuing our partnership with Don as he assumes this new role," said CWIC CEO Evelyn Diaz.

"I look forward to working with leadership, faculty, staff and students in this moment of great opportunity at the City Colleges to ensure CCC students receive an education of value and are prepared to reach their goals," said Mr. Laackman.

Secretary of Education praises CPS and CWIC on Career & Technical Education innovations
This month, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan praised recent innovations in Chicago Public School's Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs, including a student assessment built by CWIC for CPS.

"[W]e launched an overhaul of Chicago's CTE program [and] built 12 College and Career Academy sites modeled after high-performing career and training academies that have flourished in other cities...And CPS launched a novel Employability Assessment last fall that assesses student skills in areas like problem-solving abilities, work ethic, and computer literacy," said Secretary Duncan.

This assessment, built by CWIC's Youth Director, Leslie Beller, was rolled out to more than 16,800 CTE students this year, and is expanding to other youth focused programs in the City, including After School Matters and Chicago Public Schools' Alternative Schools.
