Born in NYC, Dawa Tarchin Phillips grew up in a multicultural family in Europe and speaks English, German and French fluently.
An experienced, non-sectarian Buddhist practitioner for nearly twenty years, he teaches as an authorized lama of the Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism in the U.S. and abroad.
Dawa studied and trained as an ordained monk with the late Tibetan Buddhist meditation master Gendun Rinpoche and completed two 3-year meditation retreats at Dhagpo Kundreul Ling Hermitage in France, combining the unique perspective of a western/international upbringing with the traditional training of an authentic Buddhist teacher and long term practitioner
His Tibetan name, "Dawa Tarchin" means "Accomplished Moon". His title "Lama" means dharma teacher.
Now a lay meditation teacher, author and socially responsible entrepreneur, Dawa is a visiting researcher in the Department of Psychology at the University of California Santa Barbara - where his research focuses on the benefits of meditation in school children - and is appreciated by students around the world for his joyful presence, insight and clarity of mind.
Dawa is the founder and board member of The Institute of Compassionate Awareness (TICA), a 501c3 registered public benefit initiative that provides secular meditation training to school children and youth, and has been a guest lecturer at numerous academic institutions around the country, including Cal Poly, The University of Oregon, University of Portland, Virginia Commonwealth University and Washington and Lee University.
He serves as President/CEO of Empowerment Holdings, a U.S. based coaching and consulting firm that counsels experienced professionals and business owners in Mindfulness Based Leadership and conscious business practices.
Dawa is the resident teacher of the Santa Barbara Bodhi Path Buddhist Center and lives in Santa Barbara, California.
