Robert Ketchell's Book "Japanese Gardens In A Weekend" is critically acclaimed and translated into Japanese
Teaching at The Sacred Space Sunday August 29, 2010 4PM
Robert Ketchell first visited Japan in 1980, with the intention of looking at a few gardens and then traveling overland to India. After a week in Kyoto he realized it was a case of love at first sight. Consequently he became apprenticed to a Kyoto master gardener for four years, and also studied the history and philosophy of the Japanese garden tradition at Kyoto University.
Since 1984 he has followed a career of creating gardens blending 'western' and 'eastern' approaches. He has created gardens in Britain, Europe, Japan and the US. He was a founder member and Chairman of the Japanese garden Society (UK). He has lectured widely on the Oriental garden tradition, written many periodical articles and a book for a general audience, also directed a documentary film on the subject. Over the last 12 years he has taken garden tours to Kyoto every spring and autumn, and has also taken several tours to China. He remains as enchanted with Japan as ever.
It doesn't matter what style your garden is for you to benefit from the knowledge of what elements will bring peace and serenity to your space. There are universal truths at work in the garden.
Cost for this lecture is $18.

Your Inner Gardener Can Heal Your Soul Japanese gardens have a matchless allure-so still, and with a profound sense of beauty. All the more amazing, then, that you can construct such a special place so quickly, with this guide to planning, materials, plants, pruning, and special additions. The transformation can begin in a single weekend with a miniature Japanese garden in an old sink for display on a balcony or patio, or with trellis panels made from bamboo. It takes two weekends to add a zigzag bridge as a centerpiece to an iris garden or to put up an arbor. In less than a month, you can enjoy a vertical garden on a sleep slope, a heart-shaped pool with rockery, waterfall, or tea garden. The work lasts only a short time-the pleasure, forever.
"Ketchell has compiled a realistic guide to constructing more than 20 outstanding Oriental garden features. Detailed directions combine with impeccable illustrations, and Ketchell's informed explanations of construction techniques, material requirements, tools, and equipment make even the most intricate design attainable."-Booklist.
He will only be in the USA for a short time now, and we are privileged to have him teach in our intimate venue.
We are excited to learn from him the simple techniques that put us in touch with the Zen of the garden.
