Happy Monday Otter Families!
Thank you so much for attending conferences last week! It is so exciting to see such a great turn out for these important goal setting conferences. It means more than you know to your students and their teachers that you could participate. We are always so thrilled with the number of families that attend conferences. Last year 95% of Einstein parents attended Fall conferences and 96% of parents attended the January conferences. We look forward to reporting this year's conference attendance with you as it becomes available!!
Last week we also enjoyed participating in National Walk to School Day! Over 100 students participated in this event that is designed to promote healthy living and better air quality. As we all know, increased physical activity can combat a host of health problems facing kids today and by replacing car trips to school with walking or bicycling we are reducing air pollution! Two of our PTSA parents, Karen Williams and Tiffany Elrod worked hard to plan this event. Their efforts resulted in a very success event (despite the rain) which included coordination with Redmond Police to establish a large police presence along 116th Street to ensure walkers were safe! Thank you Karen and Tiffany for your hard work.
We are looking forward to another exciting week ahead!

Curriculum Update: 4th Grade
4th grade is a wonderful place to be this year! Students are hardworking and motivated to learn! There are three classes altogether and each and every one is making a unique and dynamic contribution to school. For the past few weeks, students have been completing community building activities and sharing their ideas in all subjects, particularly reading and writing. EnVision math groups and literacy groups are underway. Students are immersed in problem solving and critical analysis of material. Multiplication, division, and fractions are just a few of the highlights yet to come.
Besides learning new routines and making new friends, students are exploring various environments and world biomes in science, too. Darling beetle bugs are dear friends and capture students' attention throughout the day. For writing, students have been developing on-demand expository paragraphs and journal writing. Washington State history is the focus for the year in social studies and will begin by the middle of November. The students have demonstrated a passion for art by developing colorful robots to display their personal interests. We generated a time capsule to open in the spring to see how their hopes for 4th grade match-up to their experiences. Netbooks have arrived and students began using the Internet for research.
Overall, the year is underway and goal setting conferences just finished! We have met with a very committed and dedicated group of parents, many of whom have generously volunteered to work with us! Dance week is coming on October 27th and Mrs. Plate has plans for our crew! Keep tuning in for more adventures as they unfold throughout the year! 4th Grade Team Michelle Brennan, Allie Holzer, Barbara King

1. Select the event you want from the School Calendar, for instance the EIN - Family Event: Dance on October 27 2. Click once on the event to go to the detail page 3. On the right side of the event details you will find the "follow" menu, click on Add to My Calendar

4. Complete the steps in the pop-up menus that follow to add the event to your online calendar

2011-12 Reflections: Entry Deadline is October 28
The Einstein PTSA is proud to once again be participating in the National PTA Program Reflections. The program offers students the opportunity to create works of art for fun and recognition. This year's theme is "Diversity Means..."
Encouraging your child to submit an entry this year is one way you can promote the arts in your home and at our school. Students K-6 can submit works of art in six areas: dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, and the visual arts (which includes art forms such as drawing, painting, print making, and collage).
The deadline for entry is 4pm on October 28. Rules and application documents can be found here. For more information, please contact Laura D'Urso at reflections@einsteinptsa.org.
