Principal's Message

Hello Otter Community,

Those of you that have 5th or 6th grade students are probably well aware of the fact that we had visitors from Microsoft here on Thursday but I wanted to share the experience with all families because it was really exciting!

A team of Microsoft employees, led by Mr. Edwin Rodriguez, came to Einstein to share some information with students. There were two presentations groups. One shared information on careers in technology and how education is key to a successful future in the industry and the other shared information on "Cloud" computing and how it encompasses many of the technologies students already use.  One of the groups also shared information on how the Kinect was developed. Students had a chance to experience the Kinect during their lunch recess. As you can imagine, they were very excited to do that! They were also very excited about the prizes that were distributed throughout both presentations. Students were awarded Rubik's Cubes, Kinect games, and other items.

After the presentations, the Microsoft team made an incredibly generous donation to the school. They gave us a Sony Vaio laptop and an Xbox/Kinect bundle with 2 games. We were very surprised by their kind donation. We plan to add the Sony Vaio to our small lab of computers that students have access to. We also have preliminary  plans to use the Xbox and Kinect in our Lunch Buddies program and during monthly Principal Awards lunches.

Thank you so much to Microsoft staff members: Edwin Rodriguez, Anne Sprute, Kristin Swan, Ron Forbes, Mike Novasio, and Anand Balasubramanian for their time and generosity!

Have a great weekend Einstein Families!

** SCHOOL NEWS **

April is National Poetry Month

And it's been a fun month in the library. Students have listened to books that are one long poem as well as short poems that are funny and some that are sad. They have talked about the message that the poet is trying to relate to us through the poetry. Some students have written acrostic poems and others have researched and written Haiku poetry. Since Earth Day is this month, some students have researched Earth Day and written poems about reducing, reusing and recycling. Additionally some of the classes have played "Poetry Tag"; finding poems that can be linked in different ways.

Ask your children at home what they've learned today!

Second Grade Update

Second Graders are diligently working on a new, math computer program called First In Math. Each student is participating in fun math games that enforce facts and problem solving in a variety of ways. It is always exciting to see who earns "Player of the Day". How objects balance and what makes them rotate in different directions are questions our next science unit Balance and Motion will answer for our second grade inquisitive minds.

Finally, we can't forget to share that April is poetry month (as noted above) and second graders will be writing inspirational poetry to bring home and show off to their parents in a personal poetry book.

April Assemblies, Mark your calendar

We have two wonderful assemblies coming at the end of the month. First up is the Earth day Assembly on Friday, April 22, at 9:15 am. The students will open with a song about Earth Day and the staff will present ideas for reusing everyday materials.

Then on Friday, April 29, local author Jarrett Mentink will be at Einstein courtesy of a grant from the Einstein PTSA. His presentation is based on his first book "Alley the Cat," a wonderful lesson in rhyme. Assembly times are 1:20-2:05 pm for grades K-3 and 2:15-3:00 pm for grades 4-6.

Remember all families are welcome to join us for assemblies.
Give Kids a Hand Grant for 5th Graders!

The East Lake Washington District of Garden Clubs awarded the 5th Grade Little Buddies program a $300 Give Kids a Hand Grant to be used this spring.  The grant will cover the cost of over 30 garden-themed picture books, along with 100 annual flowers for students to plant at home.  Mrs. Ollerenshaw and Mr. Olson's students are looking forward to reading the books and enjoying the flowers with their buddies in Mrs. Stonich's 1st grade and Mrs. Wartenbe's 2nd grade classrooms.

Library Reminder to Return Books

The end of the year is closer than you think and now is the time we make sure all Einstein library books are returned. Your child has received notices for books they've checked out -- so please help your child look for any books that are missing. During the last few weeks of school our Librarian, Mrs. Sandbo, will be sending out "bills" for the cost of any books that are lost. Thank you for your help!

1,2,3 Magic starts Wednesday, April 20

Don't miss out on these parenting classes offered at Einstein by our school counselor, Mrs. CraneStarting April 20th, classes are held once a week for 3 weeks with day and evening classes available. Please return the registration form to the office if you are interested.
