Principal's Message

Hello Einstein Families,

Each day I learn more and about what a great school Einstein is. On a daily basis I observe something that makes me so proud to be your principal! At the same time, I also learn about things that need to be adjusted slightly in order to be more effective. One example of that is recess. For those of you that have been on our playground, you are aware that it is a relatively small space. For that reason, it is important for us to assist children in finding as many safe activities as we can to keep them active and busy! I recently asked students in the upper grades to write me letters about ways to make recess a better experience for all students. Their reflections were very informative and actually provided a lot of suggestions we were able to implement.

At the students' request, the PTSA is purchasing several new balls, hula-hoops, and other similar items. Additionally, Mrs. Conover is making hopscotch sachets and the staff that works during recess will be assisting students in setting up games like Red Light Green Light. We have also decided to open the small grass area next to our new portable for play.

One of the most popular activities at recess is soccer, however this is also a difficult activity for kids to play without proper equipment or supervision. We have many students that are very skilled at soccer and play with great intensity, just as we have many students that are learning to play for the first time. For these reasons, we have decided to suspend soccer play until we are able to order jerseys and small goals which will allow us to run two small field games with teams that will be established with adult assistance at the beginning of recess. Additionally, I will be facilitating "lessons" around what is school safe soccer play as opposed to how kids might play on their competitive teams. We are also working out details with Arena Sports for them to come and facilitate some soccer activities during recess a couple of times a semester. If you have experience coaching or playing soccer, I welcome your assistance in facilitating soccer in coming weeks. Please contact me if you are interested in helping.

Have a great weekend!

Melissa Pointer, Principal

February 8 - Remember to Vote on the LWSD Levy

Lake Washington School District (LWSD) has a growing student population and not enough space.

But a successful levy means relief of overcrowding! Make sure to get your ballot filled out, the envelope signed, and sent in by the February 8 deadline.

The cost of the 2011 levy is $0.31 per $1,000 of assessed valuation; for a house valued at $500,000 that amounts to approximately $13 per month for six years. That is approximately the cost of four trips to Starbucks and less than a movie ticket and popcorn!

For more information, please read the LWSD coverage.

What's Happening in our First Grade Classes?

News from our 1st Grade Teachers

Today, first grade went to the Seattle Aquarium and participated in the Salmon Journey program. Students toured the aquarium in small groups and enjoyed seeing the otters.

First grade classes just started weekly spelling words. Each day we use the words in practice and on Fridays we have a weekly spelling test. We are also studying air and weather in science. We are learning all aspects of how meteorologists measure and predict weather. Students are learning about different types of clouds and how to describe changes in weather over time. You may want to go home and ask your child what they have learnt today!

Do you know why your children love our PE Classes?

News from Mrs. Plate, our PE Teacher

In PE we've been learning and playing pickle-ball. Parents, ask your kids WHY the game is called Pickle-ball. It's a cute story. We'll be moving on with all students participating in a math battle - a math challenge game with competition and fitness. We'll then continue onto cupstacking, an exciting individual and team sport where competitors stack and un-stack 12 specially designed plastic cups in predetermined sequences at lightning speed! Students race against the clock for fastest times and race against each other. It's great for hand-eye coordination. We'll then continue with our aerobic and fitness unit, learning about our resting and exercise heart rates. Our circus unit will be next, learning how to juggle, spin poi balls, walk on stilts, jump on pogo sticks, balance peacock feathers, poles, balance boards, flower sticks, and maybe even unicycles!

Thank you for Supporting the Book Fair!

What a wonderful turn out for the Book Fair! In three days, we totaled over $3000 in sales with $1200 in profit. That's a lot of new books for our students to enjoy now, and in the coming years. Thank you to everyone who staffed the Fair and to all the book lovers who supported this fantastic event!

Next Einstein Assembly: Henry's Freedom Box on Feb 10

Our next assembly is a Book It All Over Theater presentation of Henry's Freedom Box by Ellen Levine. Each class has had the book read to them during Library class, and students are excited to see it performed! Please join in the fun (if you are able) from 9:15-10:15 am on Thursday, February 10th. Parents are always welcome at school assemblies.

Keep the Parking Lot Safe for our Children

Parents,

Please remember that the cul-de-sac in front of the building is reserved for use by those picking up 3 or more Einstein students after school. A carpool permission slip must be displayed on the front dashboard of your vehicle. These are available in the front office. There have been several people using the cul-de-sac lately to pick up 1 or 2 students which causes significant congestion and delays the buses. It is also important to stay with your vehicle to continue to pull forward as space allows.

Additionally, please refrain from standing in front of the two exterior Kindergarten doors adjacent to the parking lot. That area has been very congested lately which has caused students to step into the cul-de-sac to walk around parents blocking the sidewalk.

Thank you for your attention to our children's safety and your cooperation!
