Hello Einstein Families,
Our second set of Parent Teacher conferences for the 2010-11 school year are scheduled in the afternoons of Jan 27th, 28th, and 31st. Teachers will be sending home confirmation of your individual conference appointment times very soon.
These conferences provide an opportunity for you to check in on your student's progress towards the goals they established during the first set of conferences in October. You will also be reviewing your student's report card from first semester with your child's teacher. Please remember to bring your child to the conference unless directed otherwise by your child's teacher. We'd love for you to come with questions you may have for your child's teacher and please bring a quiet activity for your child to do while you are meeting with his/her teacher.
On another note, as I mentioned in the PTSA General Membership Meeting on Thursday, I will be holding a parent/community Strategic Planning Meeting on February 10th from 6:00-8:00 PM in the Einstein Library. This meeting will give parents and the community an opportunity to analyze data on Einstein and offer input on their hopes for the Einstein Strategic plan that is currently in development. I hope you can join us.
Have a great weekend!
Melissa Pointer, Principal

February 8th - REMEMBER TO VOTE on the LWSD Levy
February 8 Levy for Addtional Classroom Space to House Growing Student Population
Lake Washington School District is growing! Nearly 600 more students arrived in district schools in September than the year before. Growth is projected to continue at a rate of about 450 students per year, which equals the number of students in an average elementary school.
The proposed capital projects levy would allow the district to build additional classrooms to house the district's growing population. This proposal provides for permanent classroom space that will continue to be needed in coming years based on current student population projections. Classroom additions to Redmond High School and Eastlake High School would be built as well as a new small school open to secondary students from around the district, focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
Ballots were mailed on January 19 and must be postmarked by February 8. More information, including frequently asked questions, is available on the district's website.

What's Happening in Kindergarten Classes?
News from our Kindergarten Teachers

This January, Kindergarten has been studying the season of winter in science. We also recently had a Nature Vision Science visit about snakes. One child got to dress up as a snake in each class. They all got to touch a baby snake. We learned many fascinating facts about snakes including that snakes have "goggles" protecting their eyes and their skin is not slimy, it is soft. The Nature vision program is an excellent science visiting science program sponsored by our PTSA. We would like to thank the PTSA for continuing to bring this to us every year in all grade levels.
In Social Studies, we are studying, What is in my Neighborhood. During this unit kids talk about the different buildings that are in a neighborhood and how to take care of our neighborhood; this tied into our study of Martin Luther King Jr. and how he helped his neighborhood and the country.
Finally, this Friday we have the privilege of going to Evergreen Jr. High on a morning field trip. The students at Evergreen have written and published their own stories and would like to share them with the Einstein Kindergarten. This is a great field trip for the children to see what they have to look forward to in school in the years to come. In addition, it is a great way for the kids to see fellow student authors and gain ideas for their own writing.

Calling all gently used tennis balls
Yes, you are reading the article title correctly. Einstein has a wonderful idea for a recycling and school improvement project with used tennis balls; on the feet of chairs and tables they greatly cut down the noise in high-traffic, high-turnover spaces like the school's computer lab.
So if you have any gently used tennis balls that need a home, contact Candice Giffin at communications@einsteinptsa.org to arrange collection.
