Dear Parents,
For the final article about ways in which schools can improve the performance of students, I will focus on the topic of collaboration.
A dictionary defines collaboration as, "the act of working with another or others on a joint project." The act of teaching children should be the true definition of collaboration and a truly collaborative effort.
Time should be set aside to focus on student work - what we expect as teachers to be our work and the work of students. What do we expect student performance to look like? What are our common agreements and expectations around what we expect students to know and to be able to do? How can we as educators make school easier for students and parents to learn the system and expectations? How can we use common language and expectations each year so students do not always have to relearn paper headings, homework expectations, note taking and behavioral expectations? These are just a few examples of ways in which teachers collaborate to make schools easier for students as they move through the system. As a part of "working together" parents play a key role in supporting schools and providing for us their hopes and dreams for their children.
We realize daily how fortunate we are as a school to have a vital parent community who continues to have faith in us to do the right thing for all students at Einstein Elementary.
Thanks,
Karen Bates, Principal

enVisionMATH Materials now Available Online
Online resources are now available for you to help your student in grades K-5 with math. The newly-adopted K-5 enVisionMATH program provides a Web site with resources to supplement the materials the students are using in the classroom today. Instructions on how to access enVisionMATH from home can be found on the LWSD Web site here.
Once you know how to access the site, username and password generation instructions depend on your child's grade.
- 3rd to 5th Grade Students have their own username and password. They can log on and share that information with you.
- Kindergarten to 2nd Grade Students: You will need to go online to Parent Access to get your student's password.

Emergency Drills at Einstein
Today, students at Einstein Elementary practiced a lock down procedure. Examples of when a lock down procedure would be used are: if there were an intruder in the area that authorities felt was unsafe or if someone were inside the school that school authorities were concerned about.
State law requires that schools practice emergency drills--e.g. fire, earthquake, lock down--once a month. With today's lock down drill we have covered them all. Students and staff take these practices seriously and do a good job with all procedures. Chris Muench, the Einstein parent safety liaison, observes all drills and provides feedback and suggestions to the staff afterwards. We would like to recognize and thank Chris for all of his efforts in this position.

Encourage Students to Read during Winter Break - a message from our Librarian
In an effort to encourage students to read over the winter break, we were able to allow each student to choose a book of their own to keep. Our library receives books from Community members as their children outgrow favorite books. In addition, Target and Scholastic donated some books for our students. Please continue to encourage your children to read. Recommend favorites that you remember and that could just be the "push" that gets them started.
Some online resources and LWSD databases can be found here.

Reminders Before Winter Break
A few reminders before winter break begins on Dec 20th:
- Through Dec 16th, please bring any non-perishable food items and unwrapped gifts to the Collection Red Bucket in front of the office. Donated items will go to Hopelink to help local families in our community this holiday season.
- By Dec 17th, check the LOST and FOUND closet located outside the Library and reclaim your missing items. Any remaining items will be donated to local charities over the break.
- Donations accepted anytime. The School Health Room will gladly accept any spare clothes, with sweat-pants being the most practical. Please bring donations to the office.
Thank you!
