Principal's Message
Dear Families,

I would like to focus this week at ways in which you at home could improve your child's study habits.

Learning skills need to be fostered at home.
Parents need to be as active in their child's education as any teacher or tutor. You can help your children excel in school. All it takes is a little creativity and some cooperation from your family. There are lots of simple things you can do every day. Here are three:
  • Turn off the TV!
  • You Study Too!
  • A Place of Their Own
Maintaining direct involvement in your child's education is crucial to his academic success. The ability to plan, organize and manage time will benefit your child in every area of life. The demands of the classroom are an opportunity to foster those abilities. Create a home environment where good study habits are primary and appreciated. Your child will develop vital skills and confidence they will need to face the challenges of life in the classroom and beyond.

Thanks,
Karen Bates, Principal

** SCHOOL NEWS **

Lake Washington Schools Foundation

The Lake Washington Schools Foundation was established five years ago to promote academic excellence for all students in the District.  The Foundation partners with the local businesses, government, other Foundations, and our community to raise money that goes directly to support our schools.  LWSF funds programs for the District, for schools, for classrooms, and for individuals.  Nearly all of our 24,000 have been touched in some way by Foundation programs.

For more information about work being done in your community and how you can help, please read the recent news release here.

Vision and Hearing Screening Volunteers Needed

Vision and Hearing screening for all students is scheduled for Thursday, October 14th from 9am to 2pm. We need parents willing to work all or half of the day. Please contact Rana Shafi at [email protected] if you are interested in helping.

Otter Wear Orders

Thank you to everyone who ordered Otter Wear. Orders placed between September 3rd - 21st will be delivered to the school in early October. Look for more details about order distribution in upcoming Ottermail issues.

Volunteer Reminder

Thank you to everyone who has signed up to volunteer so far this year! We just wanted to remind you that when you come to the school to volunteer or to visit:
  1. Check in at the main office.
  2. Sign the volunteer roster.
  3. Wear a nametag while you are in the building.
  4. Be sure to sign out when you are finished so that in case of emergency the office does not have to account for your whereabouts.
And, to ensure the safety of our students and staff, all volunteers must go through the district's volunteer application process and be approved before beginning a volunteer assignment. It takes just a few minutes to provide the information needed.  You can pick up an application in the office or apply at www.lwsd.org/For-Community/Volunteers.

Thank you to our wonderful Picture Day Volunteers

We would like to say a heart-felt thank you to our Picture Day volunteers. Thank you:
  • Julie Bruntz
  • Monica Trujillo
  • Denisa Farago
  • Shannon Fabien
We couldn't have done it without you!

** PTSA NEWS **

PTSA General Membership meeting is coming October 7th

Mark your calendars for the first PTSA General Membership meeting of 2010-11 school year on October 7th. In addition to getting to know this year's Board and finding out what to expect for this school year, we will be getting a demo of the Parent Access tool, new to elementary schools this year.

Parent Access is a Web-based tool to help parents stay informed and engaged with their students' education. Parent Access allows parents to view their students' attendance as well as customized contact lists for their students' teachers.

McTeacher Night is September 30th

Come to the Redmond McDonalds, between 5 and 7pm, on Thursday, September 30 to benefit Einstein Elementary School. The teachers will be working behind the counters, at the drive up window and selling cookies to benefit our school.

Plan to meet your friends for dinner and make money for our school at the same time. The more we sell the more money we make for Einstein. We thank Redmond McDonalds for this great opportunity to grow together as a school community. The teachers hope to see you there!

Northwest Collection Fundraiser starts September 30th

We are pleased to announce The Northwest Collection 2010 as our new fundraiser in place of last year's Sally Foster. It is a fun and exciting book with beautiful gift wrap, candy, jewelry, gift items, magazines and much more. Look for the catalog to come home with your child September 30. The fundraiser will run until Oct 15 so please get your orders in. We will only be sending catalogs home with the youngest child of a family and only children, but extra order forms will be available. Thank you for your support!

Have a great idea that just needs funding?

Reminder! Otter Grants submissions are open until October 29th. With the Otter Grant program, parents, teachers or staff members can submit a grant application to fund projects, programs or materials that would benefit the students at our school.

Program guidelines cover everything you want to know about the process. Applications are due October 29.

Pass the Hat and PTSA Membership Updates

As the Pass the Hat campaign comes to a close, we have collected $10,700 or 71% of our goal of $15,000. Thank you for your generosity and contributions!

Please note that we have $12,200 pledged including matching, but we cannot count matching funds until they have been received. So if your company provides a donation matching benefit, please fill out the matching request form as soon as possible. While the campaign is ending, we still welcome donations at any time. Please contact us for details at [email protected] or visit the office to pick up a Pass the Hat envelope.

Additionally we wanted to say thank you to the 218 members have joined or renewed their Einstein PTSA membership this year. It's never too late to join Einstein's PTSA.
