BGS reaches out to young families at Nature Fest
The Botanical Garden Society participated in this year's Nature Fest held at the Boardman River Nature Center. Volunteers Carol Silverman, Ruth Frost, Rick George, and Terry Harding gave out more than 90 plants for children to place in peat pots. There was a great deal of interest in the Botanic Garden among the many young families that participated. Education is one of the primary goals of The Garden and we look forward to introducing many more young students to the wonders of nature.

SITE NEWS
IT'S A GUSHER!
The Botanical Garden Society recently contracted with Cluff Well Drilling to put in the first irrigation well for the garden. Our on-site team will now look into how to best cover and protect the well site, and consider options for electric power to run it. Board members met with a Consumers Energy engineer and received various options both for permanent and temporary electrical service to the Visitor Center and irrigation well. Our first well usage will be to supply water for Aztec Painting to power wash the Visitor Center prior to its painting. Thanks to a grant from The Friendly Garden Club of Traverse City, which covered half of the cost of the well, BGS was able to achieve its goal of having a water source for irrigation. This is a critical first step in the development of the garden. Thanks, Friendly Garden Club!
Picnic Grove Update Deering Tree Service has completed grinding down the stumps in the picnic grove and has filled in the area with topsoil . . . another donated improvement to the park! Picnic tables await your baskets of food. Come and enjoy the new location for a lunch or dinner.

BGS Welcomes New Board Member Jeanne Snow
The Botanical Garden Society's Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Jeanne Snow, former Executive Director of the Regional Community Foundation until her retirement in 2010, is our newest board member. During her tenure the Foundation became the largest grant-making foundation in northern Michigan. As Executive Director she was instrumental in the support of the Children's Garden and Learning Garden, Glen Arbor Garden, the website for the Michigan Garden Clubs and also the endowment for the Friendly Garden Club. She attended the earliest planning sessions for the Botanical Garden Society and has looked for opportunities, over the years, to nurture its progress. Jeanne and her husband John have lived on Old Mission Peninsula for the past fourteen years, enjoying, in Jeanne's words, "a small garden." |

Sweetwater Evening Garden Club Tours the Site
Members of the Sweetwater Evening Garden Club spent an evening at the Historic Barns Park and Garden recently, touring the site with BGS board members. The garden club joined the Michigan Barn Restoration Club on a tour of the Cathedral Barn, viewed the architectural renderings of the restoration plans for the barn, Visitor Center and walled garden, had a driving tour of the whole park and then held their business meeting in the picnic grove. BGS was delighted to host the Sweetwater group and looks forward to their return as the garden construction progresses.

Onekama Garden Club Endorses the Capital Campaign
The Onekama Garden Club invited the Botanical Garden Society to present their featured program for July. Members were thrilled with the progress of the garden and many plan on attending the September 17 BGS Open House so they can actually "experience" the site. After viewing a Power Point program on the Botanic Garden's plans and progress, the Onekama Garden Club endorsed the Historic Barns Park and Garden Capital Campaign and purchased a group membership in the Botanical Garden Society. Some of the members also purchased individual and family memberships. Thank you so much, Onekama ladies!
