Silo Garden Competed

It took  six hours, but with the dedicated help of our volunteers we planted, watered and mulched hundreds of native plants in the 20' diameter silo garden south of the Granary. We planted penstemon, coreopsis, smooth aster, Michigan Lily, purple coneflower, showy coneflower, campanula, showy goldenrod, prairie smoke, roundleaf ragwort, prairie dropseed, baptesia and prairie dock following Carol Silverman's garden design. The plants are small but will put on good growth next spring and summer and will reach full maturity in two years, when the bloom should be stunning.

nsideSince we could only have three people at a time in the planting circle (so we didn't step on plants or each other), teams of workers finished removing grapevine and mowing the North side of the Granary, sweeping out part of the lower level of the Granary, and repotting the two tall cedars by the Granary doors. Much thanks to our volunteers, Carol & Anita Silverman, Terry Harding, Jim Cooper, Mike & Kathy McNulty, Linda Kelly, Kathy Pilon, Paul Zemstea, and Kurt and Karen Schmidt.

The Granary
The Granary has now been emptied of all items being stored there by the Traverse City Historical Center. Broken windows are being temporarily repaired until the renovation is underway.

Native Plantings Coming to Picnic Grove This Spring

zimmermanThe Botanical Garden Society will be partnering with Saving Birds Thru Habitat, Master Gardeners, and Brian Zimmerman of Four Season Nursery to establish native plantings at the picnic grove at the Historic Barns Park this spring. The groups will collaborate in an effort to replace the invasive Autumn Olive shrubs removed last summer with native trees, shrubs and perennials, which in turn will support native insect and bird populations.

Garden Heroes silo silverman

A bouquet of thank you's goes out to the Blue Star Landscape Supply Company and Anita & Carol Silverman of Traverse City.  Blue Star recently donated a truckload of pine bark mulch for the botanic garden's native plant Silo Garden. Anita & Carol volunteered their services to design the garden and oversee the planting and mulching. It is this kind of generosity and support that helps to "grow the garden".  Thanks, heroes!

giftEnd of Year Giving

Because the Botanical Garden Society of Northwest Michigan is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, supporters can receive end-of-year tax deductions when they give to the garden. In addition to cash gifts, supporters can help the garden to grow by donating one or more items from the BGS "Wish List".  See what kinds of items are needed by the BGS as we embark on the first stage of the garden's construction. Garden Run Wins Over the Rain

It was a wet and chilly September morning for the Garden Run, but that did not deter the smiles and spirit of our runners. By all accounts our 3rd annual Garden Run on our new grounds was well received by the runners and a success for the Garden. Runners and volunteers were treated to a picnic hot dog lunch and the arrival of the sun for the end of the race.
