Workbee breaks ground for planting this Saturday Second workbee planned Saturday, October 30th 10:00 am - 12:30pm
Nineteen Master Gardeners and BGS volunteers worked all morning at the Granary last Saturday, October 23, while the rain held off. By noon the sod & weeds from the silo garden had been completely removed and all roots and rocks had been sifted out of the soil. Another team worked on the north side of the Granary, clearing out the tangle of grapevine and weeds. Because of their help we will now be able to mow and maintain this area as well. The native plants for our Silo Garden have arrived and a second planting workbee is scheduled for Saturday, October 30th. We'll also finish removing weeds and grapevine from the North side of the Granary, and pick up branches at the picnic grove from the windstorm.
We will need your help again so please join us.
Kudos to all our great workers. It's so encouraging to know our Master Gardener and BGS member volunteers are so anxious to be involved in the process of building the garden. We know that Phase Two of the master plan will result in a completely landscaped garden wrapping around the Granary, but for now it is lovely to see the mowed lawns and silo bed preparation. Our dream is becoming reality!

Michigan Garden Club Conference On September 30th, the Botanical Garden Society of Northwest Michigan had the wonderful opportunity to share an update on the progress of the garden with over 270 women representing 41 garden clubs in Northern Michigan. Karen Schmidt, BGS board chair, spoke at the Michigan Garden Club, Inc.'s fall conference, outlining the organization's plans for constructing the first phase of the garden and conducting a capital campaign to fund that goal. Individual garden club boards were encouraged to endorse the capital campaign and to invite BGS speakers to present to their groups. Garden club members were encouraged to sign up for the free monthly BGS e-letter and to consider purchasing a BGS membership. Other speakers at the conference included Kay Charter of Saving Birds Thru Habitat and Hans Van Sumeren, director of NMC's Water Studies Institute.

Hike the Trails
The 25-acre site of the new botanic garden at the Historic Barns Park features a wide variety of ecosystems - high scenic overlooks, broad open meadows, wetlands and streams, and beautiful hardwood forests. One of the best way to explore this site is to walk some of the trails that intersect the park There's a trailhead right behind the barns with several trail options. Why not hike them all? The Botanical Garden Society will be busy for the next couple of years fundraising and building the first phase of the garden. But the trails are already there for you to enjoy.

Friendly Garden Club Nurtures the Botanic Garden
The Friendly Garden Club recently donated $1,000 to the Botanical Garden Society. This grant, and others,s are funded through the Friendly Garden Club's Annual Garden Walk. The $1,000 grant, combined with last year's gift of $1,500 will be applied towards the cost of a new well at the botanic garden. The Friendly Garden Club has been a long-time supporter of the botanic garden; they were one of our first founding members. This fine organization should take pride in the role they have played in helping to 'grow the garden'. Thank you Friendly Garden Club!

Edelweiss Garden Club Supports The Botanic Garden
The Edelweiss Garden Club of Gaylord helps to make Northern Michigan a more beautiful place, thanks to their many projects. The group recently enjoyed an update on the progress of the botanic garden at their October meeting, and made a generous contribution for the garden. When the group heard about the Botanical Garden Society's collaboration with the Traverse City/Garfield Township Recreational Authority for a capital campaign to restore the Cathedral Barn and build the first phase of the botanic garden, they enthusiastically voted to endorse this campaign. It is this type of encouragement and support from garden clubs like Edelweiss that have helped to make Northern Michigan's first botanic garden a reality. Thank you Edelweiss Garden Club!
