Spring Has Sprung!

spring barns

We encourage you to walk the trails on and around the site of the new Botanic Garden at the Historic Barns Park on the Commons. There are lovely vistas of the bay and the city on some of the Botanic Garden's higher points, as well as trails that intersect with the park. One of the best ways to see the whole park, including the Botanic Garden site, is to take the trailhead behind the historic barns and follow the trail up to Copper Ridge. The woodlands are bright with native wildflowers, so bring a camera or sketch pad too. This week Trillium, Spring Beauty, Dutchman's Breeches, Trout Lilies, Large-flowered Bellwort, Common Blue Violets and Downy Yellow Violets were all spotted in bloom. Although we are still planning the construction of our first garden, the woodlands are already putting on their own show!

Upcoming Garden Run fundraiser needs volunteers
Our annual Garden Run fundraiser scheduled for September 25th needs volunteers to help with all aspects of the run. Our past runs have been very successful because of generous help from enthusiastic volunteers. Please consider joining us for this important annual fundraiser as we show-case the various habitats of the Historic Barns Park and coming Botanic Garden.

Volunteers needed for Bayshore Marathon, Saturday, May 29th
The Botanical Garden Society receives funding from the well-known Bayshore Marathon in return for supplying volunteers for its annual marathon. This provides a special opportunity for us to raise revenue for our own Garden Run in September. Consider joining us for a few hours Saturday morning, May 29th,  from 7:00 am to 12:00pm. The past two years we have been asked to direct traffic and parking.

TerryTaking our message on the road
The Botanical Garden Society provided a display and handouts at Dow Garden's annual spring event in late February.  Keynote speaker  Michael Dirr attracted a sold-out crowd, so the BGSNM team had an opportunity to speak with gardeners from all over Michigan.  Many were not aware of the plans for a new botanic garden in the Grand Traverse region and responded with a great deal of enthusiasm.  The BGSNM Marketing Task Force will be planning a number of events and strategies to increase public awareness of the garden in the near future.

Planning a Picnic Grovegrove
The Botanical Garden Society is joining with two partners, SEEDS and Little Artshram, to develop a picnic grove on the site of the old grounds-keeper's house at the Historic Barns Park.  The house is no longer in existence, but the remaining concrete foundation, lilacs and wild roses are reminiscent of another time.  This spring and summer the three groups will be clearing brush and debris, installing picnic tables, and inviting the public to enjoy a picnic lunch or snack in this shady spot. BGSNM will propose that invasive plants on the site be removed and replaced with native trees, shrubs and flowers to support beneficial insects and birds as well.

Garden HeroKeith
Creating a new website with increased capacity was just one of the major goals for the Botanical Garden Society during this exciting time of growth.  Websites are expensive, requiring a significant investment on the part of an organization.  BGSNM was delighted when Keith Schmidt of New Focus Creative of Petoskey, Michigan volunteered to create and house the new website for no charge.  Bouquets for this Garden Hero!  Check out our new website at www.NorthwestMichiganGarden.org.

studentsNMC Students work on brochure
The Botanical Garden Society reaped design benefits from Northwest Michigan College students Jamie Ewing,
Michele Acosta, and Stephanie Johnson when they chose the Botanical Garden Society as their class "design project". The three students received some valuable hands-on experience and the Botanical Garden Society received a layout for the Grand Traverse Commons Arboretum Guide. We thank them for their design work and wish them continued success in their studies.
