            COAST 4 U QUARTERLY

Issue No. 6
Fall 2011

Dear Friend of the California Coast,

It's been an eventful quarter - in additional to our successful launch of the new Whale Tail License Plate and the excitement of our ever-popular California Coastal Cleanup Day, the Coastal Commission has had to say good-bye to our beloved  Executive Director, Peter Douglas. We will miss  Peter - but are heartened by what he has left us with - his good example, his values and integrity, our beautiful coast, and our new ED - the fabulous Charles Lester, formerly our Senior Deputy Director.

Coast wishes,
Chris Parry
Public Education Manager
Thank you Peter.
Peter Douglas
Peter Douglas recently retired, after spending 41 years working as a dedicated public servant for the State of California and 26 of those years as the Coastal Commission's Executive Director.  Peter's leadership and vision secured the protection of the coastline of our State for all to appreciate and enjoy.  His legacy provides a framework to remind us all that the "coast is never saved; it's always being saved".  Peter was recently interviewed by Earth Alert, Inc for the "Heroes of the Coast" project. To watch a clip of this video, please click here

As a tribute to Peter's legacy of environmental leadership in the state, the Peter Douglas Coastal Fellowship Fund has been established to promote public service and cultivate the next generation of coastal stewards in California. Funds will be used to place a diverse group of talented individuals in mentored fellowships at the Coastal Commission. The Monterey Bay Sanctuary Foundation administers the fund on behalf of the California Coastal Commission, as a nonprofit partner.
2011 Photo Contest Winner Announced!
The winners for the 13th Annual California Ocean & Coastal Amateur Photography Contest have just been selected and we're pleased to share the results with you.  This year's contest was eventful for us because we joined forces with the online photo contest run by the Thank You Ocean Campaign, and working together, the new digital-only contest doubled participation and received many beautiful entries.  We also awarded a "Viewers' Choice" winner for the first time.  All top winners will enjoy a luxurious overnight hotel stay generously donated by Fairmont Hotels & Resorts of California.

The "Judges' Choice" winner for first prize was Brian Friedman, who snapped a school of mackerel swimming underneath a dive boat off Catalina Island.  The "Viewers' Choice" winner was David Harbin, who captured a sunrise near Monterey Harbor one early morning.  Please see all the wonderful winning entries as well as 13 honorable mentions at http://mycoastalphoto.com.

Become a Coastal Steward!

Think of the coast & ocean when you prepare for winter and the holidays. Consider the following actions:

1. Divert rainspouts from paved areas to lawn or other vegetation in order to reduce storm runoff.

2. Give memberships and experiences as gifts. When giving "stuff," look for limited or no packaging and environmentally friendly materials.

3. To pack items for mailing, use newspaper or old towels rather than foam peanuts to cushion items.
