Dear Friend,
We are thrilled to announce the launch of our new Whale® License Plate design! It's been a long time coming, but was worth the wait. We have some great promotions lined up to celebrate the launch.
And don't forget to mark your calendar for Coastal Cleanup Day on September 17th - as summer flies by, it's around the corner.

Whale Tail License Plate Gets New Look
WHALE OF A DEAL REVEALED

On August 2, the California Coastal Commission and the Department of Motor Vehicles officially launched the state's new Whale Tail® Ecoplate by announcing the details of a "whale of a deal". The first 1,000 online orders on Ecoplates.com will score a standard Whale® Tail plate for 50% off ($25 instead of $50) or $25 off a personalized plate ($73 instead of $98). This special deal is made possible by the support of our Stewards of the Coast Campaign sponsors, including convention and visitor bureaus from across the state, the City of Dana Point, SeaWorld San Diego, and Waste Management WM EarthCare. As an added incentive to encourage people to purchase the new plate, they will also each receive two tickets to visit one of several California destination attractions. For more information, visit http://www.ecoplates.com.
The winners of the Coastal Commission's contest to redesign the license plate were also announced. After receiving more than 300 entries in a public contest to design a new license plate that retained the popular Whale Tail theme, the Coastal Commission selected two winners: Painter Elizabeth Robinette Tyndall of Bethel Island on the California Delta in Contra Costa County, and Graphic Designer Bill Atkins of Laguna Beach in Orange County. The artists were invited to collaborate on a new Whale Tail® image, combining facets of each of their winning designs. A team of graphic designers made final refinements. For photos and more information on Elizabeth and Bill, visit the newsroom at http://www.ecoplates.com.
Funds from the sale of the plates support coastal conservation and other environmental efforts in California. |

Coastal Steward Tips
Clean & Green Summer Boating
With nearly 1 million registered vessels, California loves to be out on the water. Free your spirit this summer, but keep your planet in mind.
#1. Take Action For Your Engine.
It is unlawful to discharge oil or fuel into navigable waters. Regularly check gaskets, hoses, and other connection points to prevent oil or fuel leaks from your boat. Change filters often. Always recycle or properly dispose of used oil, oil filters, and oil absorbents. If you have petroleum regulation questions, check with your marina manager.
#2. Be Greener With Your Graywater.
Graywater pollutes and encourages unwanted algae growth in our waterways. Instead of discharging soapy sink and shower water from your boat into the environment, use shore-side facilities whenever possible. Limit the amount of water and cleaning product you must use onboard, and use non-phosphate and biodegradable soaps.
#3. Recycle Your Monofilament Fishing Line.
Improperly discarded fishing line can remain in our ecosystems for 600 years, not only strangling our wildlife, but also damaging our boat propellers. Many harbors throughout California now offer fishing line recycling containers. Check this list for participating locations, and if you do not see one in your area, request one from your marina or yacht club.

Kids Celebrate Ocean Day with Adopt-A-Beach Cleanups
The images featured in the photos in the header above were created by California school children celebrating Kids' Ocean Day this spring. They learned about the ocean and marine pollution at school, and then they visited the coast to participate in beach cleanups and create these formations of talking fish.
