            COAST 4 U QUARTERLY

Issue No. 1
Spring 2010
Dear Friend,

Welcome to the premier edition of the COAST4U Quarterly!

We hope you enjoy our new on-line newsletter. Our intent is to keep our supporters up-to-date on the latest developments in the world of coastal stewardship, including ways that individuals can and are making a difference to the California coast. In each issue, you will read about some of these people, get tips on reducing your environmental impact, and ideas on where you can go to enjoy the coast. This issue features articles on our record-breaking 25th Anniversary of Coastal Cleanup Day and the incomparable seaside destination - Point Reyes National Seashore. Also, don't miss the "In Every Issue" section which includes spotlight articles on stand-out volunteers and grantees, and a Q & A feature with the California Coastal Commission. In this issue, we interview Commission Executive Director and coastal hero Peter Douglas.

Please keep in touch. We'd love to hear feedback on this issue, our format, and ideas for future articles.

Sincerely,
Christiane Parry

(San Francisco) California's beaches and inner waterways may be collecting spots for marine debris, but Californians have demonstrated their support for clean beaches by turning out by the tens of thousands at the 25th Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day. On September 19, 2009 they scoured beaches, shorelines, and inland locations, picking up trash and debris, covering over 800 sites and gathering hundreds of tons of trash.

Some 80 miles of unspoiled coastline are preserved in the park, and there are beaches, grasslands, forest, and estuaries to explore. National Seashore information is available at the Bear Valley Vistior Center, or call (415) 464-5100.

"The Point Reyes National Seashore Education Program offers classes and field seminars on environmental education and natural history, and a summer youth camp. The Clem Miller Environmental Education Center, an overnight facility available to groups for educational purposes, features hiking trails and interpretive programs. For information on reservations for field programs or the Clem Miller Center, call (415) 663-1224."

Coastal Steward Tip
Stop marine debris at its source by creating less waste to begin with, and think of how you can reuse. When packing food for lunch or a picnic, put food in reusable containers rather than disposable plastic and paper bags.  Use cloth napkins and towels instead of paper napkins and paper towels. Use a sponge or towel for cleanup jobs in the kitchen.
