Dear Friends and Family,
Our work has just begun. Yet in tracing the multiple
energy sources that grace Killian's Foundation, a
pattern arises: collaborative joy. People are donating,
advocating, promoting, and connecting in Killian's
exuberant spirit to advance Integrative Healthcare for
children with cancer and other life threatening
illnesses. That was evident at the Grumpy Fish
Awards, and you can feel it working throughout the
upcoming Mothers Day event at Candle and Candle
79 in NYC, Serena's butterfly necklaces, the July
celebration honoring Killian's birthday and even in the
expanding KMF Board (welcome to Catherine Cooke,
Leonard Easter and Diane Rooney!)
While Killian zeroed in on the therapies that gave him
relief (and worked to promote acupuncture,
aromatherapy, reflexology, massage, yoga, nutritional
healing etc.), his vision is connected to a larger
movement-one where caring for seriously ill children
means treating the whole child (not just his/her
disease). We are learning from clinicians,
practitioners, doctors and families nationwide that
Killian really did have his finger on the pulse of best
practices to come.
I know in my heart Killian is pleased with the direction
we've taken. He would be bugging all his friends,
their friends, and their friend's friends to vote every
day on the Pepsi Refresh Project site to get
aromatherapy kits to every child newly diagnosed with
cancer. So, let's do it! Forward this email to all your lists!
Thank you for your continued support,
Kemp Battle, Treasurer, Killian Mansfield Foundation

| KILLIAN'S BUTTERFLY BY SERENA - THE PERFECT MOTHER'S DAY GIFT! |
 |
|
Killian chose the butterfly as a symbol for his
foundation when this time last year he had an
opportunity to sit with and learn from world-renowned
origami master Michael LaFosse. Killian
regarded LaFosse "the origami masters' origami
master" because LaFosse and his partner Richard
Alexander
developed folding paper considered to be the best in
the world.
As Michael and Killian folded Michael's Midori Luna
Moth design together, Killian told Michael about
starting a foundation to help children with cancer and
other debilitating diseases feel better, heal, and live
more fully through integrative therapies.
Michael, moved by Killian's commitment, said he
wanted to create a butterfly design for Killian's
foundation, because "butterflies symbolize change."
Michael encouraged Killian, saying his work would
"pollinate," spreading the word about
integrative healthcare. Has it ever! On the heels of
major national press
attention, interest
in Killian's story-and of the cause he so fervently
championed-continues
to spread.
Catskill artist and Killian friend Serena Van
Rensselaer, with inspiration from LaFosse's butterfly,
designed a line of necklaces for KMF. The hand-
hammered silver butterfly pendant
comes in two sizes, with or without
Killian's birthstone-ruby, a gem long representing
protectiveness of both heart and child - and on a silver
chain or a leather cord.
Serena is donating all proceeds to the Killian
Mansfield Foundation -
just in time for Mother's (and Father's!) Day, a gift that's
also a
meaningful contribution to help nurture sick children.

| 1ST ANNUAL GRUMPY FISH AWARDS! |
 |
|
The Killian Mansfield Foundation's First Annual
Grumpy Fish Awards were given during a ceremony at
Logstock, the Woodstock home of Joni Elenson and
Rob Ramirez on March 12. Killian created Grumpy
Fish in response to hospital cartoon characters he felt
were out of touch with discomfort.
Nearly 100 KMF donors and awardees gathered to
celebrate practitioners in the field of integrative
pediatrics-which combines the best of conventional
and complementary approaches. Each year, several
types of practitioners-from acupuncturists to
nutritionists-will be honored for providing innovative
and free services to severely ill children.
This year's
Grumpy Fish Award recipients were Diane Rooney
from the Integrative Therapies Program for Children
with Cancer at Columbia Medical Center in New York
City (for aromatherapy); Joy Pierson of Candle Café
and Candle 79 Restaurants in New York City (for
nutrition education); Maurice "Buzzy" Tischler of
Woodstock Integrative Health (for holistic dentistry);
Kathryn Haber of Mariposa Bodyworks of Phoenicia,
NY (for massage therapy); and Josh Paynter of West
Shokan, NY (for acupuncture).
KMF congratulations these
individuals for their innovative work and determination
to provide care for pediatric oncology patients,
regardless of their ability to pay.

VOTE DAILY TO HELP KMF WIN $50,000 FOR KIDS WITH CANCER! |
|
|
|
GREAT NEWS! A Killian Mansfield Foundation initiative
is in the running for $50,000 in funding from the Pepsi
Refresh Project and WE NEED YOU - EVERY DAY FOR
A MONTH!
The goal? Get an aromatherapy kit to every child
diagnosed with cancer in 2011.
Why? Because each
year, about 10,000 children are told they have cancer,
and the first line treatment, chemo/radiation, causes
terrible side effects-predominantly nausea and
anxiety. Aromatherapy is very
effective at relieving nausea and bringing a sense of
calm to the anxious pediatric cancer patient. Though
aromatherapy alleviates this discomfort during the
early stages of treatment, very few patients receive it
and its not covered by health insurance.
Let's help those 10,000+ children diagnosed with
cancer in the coming year. VOTE to provide them ALL
with a simple and highly effective KMF aromatherapy
kit that includes therapeutic grade essential oils:
Peppermint (for nausea) and Lavender (to restore
calm), a diffuser, and instruction guide on
complementary therapies viewed as safe and effective
by the medical community.
YOU CAN HELP! Click on the KMF Pepsi Refresh
link below. Click on the "Vote Here" button. You will
have to register with your email address and choose a
password that you will use to log in every time you
vote. YUP, that's right, every time
you vote.
We have to be in the top 10 to win!
To win we need EVERYONE to VOTE ONCE A DAY,
EVERY DAY, FOR THE ENTIRE MONTH OF MAY! VOTE,
email, post to FB, tweet, blog...WE CAN DO THIS!
