Being There...
My niece was eight years old when she e-mailed this invitation to everyone in our family:
hello fellow families,
i wanted to tell you that you are going to save the date for september 17. i will see you all there and u dont need the RSVP because your coming!
She had not said why, she just wanted us all to be there. Hesitantly we all accepted. The day came and we were all excited to find out why we had been invited. Surprisingly enough we learned that the celebration was just about "being there". She had decorated the room with colored papers and banners welcoming us in many different words. That was how she was showing her appreciation for life.
During the times that her mother and her cousin were challenged by cancer, she had understood that as a festive and appreciative unit they had gained more chances for recovery. All through the chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, and tens of other daily ordeals we had all stayed together, laughed, played, ate, joked, cried, hugged, and supported each other in so many ways. Her being there party was her way of thanking everyone for being there in the hard times.
Often times we take "being somewhere" for granted. We wake up every morning with so many tasks and agendas on our minds; we even forget this is another day of our lives that is passing by. We are not mindful of what we have and our attention gets focused on what is missing. We feel inadequate, pressured, lonely, angry, ashamed, and generally "not good enough". We forget that "good" is just a relative state of mind and is not necessarily related to the reality of what is happening right "now". After all, our minds are connecting the past experiences of loss and failure with the perception of future obstacles; thus robbing us out of what we can enjoy at this moment. My young niece had understood the importance of celebrating life and did not miss "NOW".
Mindful people are intentionally and non-judgmentally aware of their thoughts and actions in the present moment. It is "The art of conscious living." Mindfulness is being there in our bodily awareness, with our mind's thoughts, and in the presence of our feelings. When we are clearer about the realities of the present-moment and accept the conditions that it provides, we will have more value for that experience and become able to enjoy any positive result that it may contain. Our potential growth, success, and joy is just in being there with a mindful attitude.
Thich Nha tHanh in The Miracle of Mindfulness notes: "While practicing mindfulness, don't be dominated by the distinction between good and evil, thus creating a battle within oneself". We are here to celebrate life with all its challenges as life is neither good nor evil. It is just how WE deal with it. As another Thanksgiving Day is approaching we are presented with another opportunity to re-evaluate our lives and "be-there". Appreciating where we are in life and what values we place on it at the present time is a vital virtue; acknowledging the gift of being alive and enjoying "now" is the key to a healthy life-style. Based upon my practical observations, those who show gratitude for what they are presented in life do not find much reason to feel depressed, struggle with anxiety, fear failures, or react with anger. Let's celebrate being there (when we can) and prevent psychological setbacks in our lives. By appreciating what we have now, we ARE celebrating life, and WE ARE THERE.

Cultivating Gratitude
As an annual ritual, when my favorite holiday approaches, I start to pay extra attention to all the things that I have been grateful for, both now and during the past year. This year, with having a loved one in the hospital battling for his life, it is challenging to be grateful.
As I sat helplessly in the hospital room, watching him curled up in fetal position from the pain of 7 IV lines, the thought of having gratitude was far from reality. How can I be grateful when I see a bright young man with so much promise in life suffer so much and yet be grateful?
As the thoughts of gratitude started to occupy my mind, I slowly began to realize there are still so many things that I am grateful for; even as I witness misery. I was grateful for all the great nurses that were taking care of him; I was grateful that for each of his symptoms there was a medication available; I was grateful that he has such a loving family; I was grateful that there is still hope...and the list went on.
As I began the gratitude process, I started to feel better and brightness began to surface again. It's amazing how one simple, easy, and positive action can change so much in a person's perspective.
Expressing gratitude means being in a state of thankfulness. When we are thankful and have appreciative thoughts, we are putting out vibrations of love, happiness, peace, joy, prosperity, etc., into the universe. When you believe in the universal law of "what you give you shall receive", then you are in the gratitude state of mind and you have no reason for suffering. There is no room for negative thoughts.
Next time when you find yourself in a challenging situation, you may turn your feelings around by cultivating some gratitude. Being thankful in any situation is a powerful attracting force.
I know this seems impossible when you are losing your home; if you are in an abusive relationship; or if you're witnessing a loved one fighting for life. Cultivating gratitude is not in any way a denial of life's difficulties. We ALL are faced with many challenges, uncertainties and much disappointment. Having gratitude allows us to meet life's challenges with an open heart; it frees us from being lost and hopeless; it allows us to face life in each moment as it unfolds. What can seem unfortunate at first may turn out to be an unforeseen blessing. Accepting WHAT IS, is the first step to cultivating gratitude. Make the unfortunate situation a platform to grow, learn, love, transform and awaken.
What are you grateful for this Thanksgiving?
