Tools of Measurement

By Dr. Daniel Sadigh

navigating through choppy waters

A friend of mine has recently made me aware of an obvious fact: errors in measurements take emotional tolls on us and set us up for dissatisfaction.    My friend was asked to build a decorative divider in a project that involved several other craftsmen as well. At the end of this task the supervising agent gave him a surprised look and complained: "why is this so much shorter?" My baffled friend said: "this is exactly 41 inches". After looking at the instruction papers his supervisor pointed out his mistake; the wall had to be 4'1" long.

You can imagine the negative feelings associated with his mistake; he was devastated. He felt dumb-founded, embarrassed, devalued, humiliated, angry, anxious, and insecure among others. Only after two of his elder colleagues admitted that they had also made similar errors, he felt some relief. Of course, he subconsciously doubted himself in other areas of his life and a small error re-injured his old wounds into depression and despair.

Our lives are filled with measurements. We count all the moments of our life; the degree of our comfort level; the currency of our work; the speed of our movement; the distance of our destination; the capacity of our space, the endurance of our action; and, hundreds of other factors. We can easily make errors by the slightest inattention to instructions or lack of certain tools for measurement. We spend years in colleges and at post-grad schools to learn how to measure with precision and which gadgets to use; however miscalculations may happen all along our lives and we need to find other tools to remedy the outcome.

We are all born with basic tools and abilities to take measurements. We are generally gifted with eyes for measuring light, ears for measuring sound, hands for measuring sensations, feet for measuring distance, brains for measuring chances of survival, and many other miraculous organs that set standards for growth. We also have a mind-body connection that enables us to move forward with relative precision, amid the obstacles and the events that may seem countering our movements.

Navigating through the unlimited possibilities of our journey can be compared to boating. Some are equipped with high speed power boats and travel fast in life; some catch the wind and sail along in peace and harmony; some utilize the power of their labor and paddle on intensely; and some hire a crew for cruising on their own yachts. Ironically we all have to pass through choppy waters and can miscalculate. We all need energy resources, a compass, navigation charts, captain's wheel, a rudder, cabin space, an anchor, and much more. To stay on course and Read on...

Gut Feeling

Are you one of five Americans that have abdominal pain?

Do you suffer from sudden urges to go, gas, or bloating?

You may have a condition called IBS, or Irritable Bowel Syndrome. The pain, constipation, or diarrhea you are experiencing may be due to damage and irritation inside your intestines. Stress is a common cause of damage to intestines. These negative thoughts and emotions set the lining of the intestine on fire and even cause it to fall apart.

Gut Feelings is a free educational program that helps you learn how your emotions can help or harm your intestines and holistic steps you can take to heal your intestines and become free of abdominal pain and IBS.

Space is limited, please call to reserve your space:

What is a Miracle?
 By Arjang Zendehdel

Miracles

Consider that the difference between a "miracle" and what we regard as nature is only frequency. For example, imagine if the sun were to rise only once in our lifetime. We would stop everything we are doing and proclaim it the most miraculous event we had ever seen! But because we see the sun rise daily, we consider it normal, ordinary, natural. Yet the sun provides so many miraculous benefits including warmth, Vitamin D and photosynthesis, supporting all of life. And, the sun does all that with great precision - every single day.   Consider that the difference between the "miraculous" and what we regard as "natural" is only frequency.

For example, imagine if the sun were to rise only once in our lifetime. We would stop everything we are doing and proclaim it the most miraculous event we had ever seen! But because we see the sun rise at a high frequency - namely daily - we consider it normal, ordinary and natural. Yet consider the miraculous benefits the sun provides, including warmth, Vitamin D and photosynthesis that support all of life. And the sun does all that with great precision, every single day. Were the sun located a little further away or closer to Earth than its distance of about 93 million miles, then life on planet Earth would cease to exist. In fact, if the level of oxygen on the planet was slightly different, or if so many other natural factors weren't exactly as they are, then life on Earth could not exist at all.

Miracles like the sun are all around us. But because we get used to them, we take them for granted. Consider the awesome design within each plant and each animal... the awesome balance in nature... the awesome beauty of the human body. People often refer to birth as a miracle. If you have witnessed a birth, you know how amazing it is. Therefore, each one of us is the product of a miracle! YOU are a miracle!

"There are two ways to live: you can live as if nothing is a miracle or you can live as if everything is a miracle." -Albert Einstein

Of course, we can explain away many events, even miraculous ones. But, the human mind can explain away anything. Just as you have a choice in everything you do, you can use your mind to either seek out the miracles in life or deny them.

I suggest that miraculous occurrences happen all the time. Life is miraculous. Nature is miraculous. In fact, the miracle of nature is not that natural events happen just once-in-a-lifetime, but that they happen so regularly.

The key is to see the extraordinary in the ordinary, to appreciate the uncommon within the common, and to acknowledge the miracles all around us all the time.

How would your life be if you live as if everything is a miracle? I invite you to start doing this today and experience a life that is much richer and more joyous!
