TRUE FRIENDS

By Dr. Daniel Sadigh

Friendship

"We are all travelers in the wilderness of this world, and the best we can find in our travels is an honest friend." -Robert Louis Stevenson.

What an amazing feeling it is to know someone without having expectations; to be with someone without passing judgments; to care for someone without being attached to the outcome; or, simply to be playful with someone without shame, embarrassment, and guilt.  When my memories remind me of such state of joy, they are always associated with true friends. I remember at age four my friend Susan was the reason that I got up in the morning and at age seven I was waiting impatiently to visit Nader. I remember as I grew older, the love and support of other friends allowed me to endure many challenges, hardships, and disappointments. My friends were there for me as I was there for them.

I have interestedly paid attention to the phenomena of friendship and realized that without a circle of friends life loses some meaning. In my practice of psychotherapy, I have observed the clear differences in coping mechanisms among those who are connected to a network of true friends and those who are not.  I have seen how loneliness, depression, and anxiety accumulate when there is no one to witness the values of one's life. I have always been curious to know more about this wonderful attribute of humanity and as a result have been blessed with finding "true friends" who have been qualified to fulfill this essential need. But, what are the qualifications of a true friend? And, if there are "true friends" then shouldn't we feel weary of "fake friends"?

Aristotle (Nicomachean Ethics, Book VIII) distinguishes three kinds of attributes in friendships.  He finds pleasure, utility, and virtue as the main distinctions in healthy friendships. Accordingly we may love a friend because of the mutual pleasure that we bring to each other's lives, the ways in which we are useful for each other, and the intrinsic virtues that are uniting our characters. The common thread of love in each case indicates a concern for a friend, for his or her sake, and not for our own. True friends are affected by what happens to their friends and feel the feelings that are experienced by them. The joy in a friend's success or the frustration and disappointment in the friend's failure is an expression of caring for each other. Friends promote each other's goodness without having...Read on...

Gut Feeling

Are you one of five Americans that have abdominal pain?

Do you suffer from sudden urges to go, gas, or bloating?

You may have a condition called IBS, or Irritable Bowel Syndrome. The pain, constipation, or diarrhea you are experiencing may be due to damage and irritation inside your intestines. Stress is a common cause of damage to intestines. These negative thoughts and emotions set the lining of the intestine on fire and even cause it to fall apart.

Gut Feelings is a free educational program that helps you learn how your emotions can help or harm your intestines and holistic steps you can take to heal your intestines and become free of abdominal pain and IBS.

Space is limited, please call to reserve your space:

 310-453-2335 or 310-477-8833

Where did the hummingbirds go?

Hummingbird

As a summer ritual my sister visits every year from New York and spends a couple of weeks with us. On her last year's visit she bought me a hummingbird feeder! She showed me where the best branch would be to hang the feeder, taught me how to make sugar water, how often to clean the feeder and so on... Then, when everything was set, the hummingbirds showed up... These magical and fairy like creatures were maneuvering in the air, defying gravity, and stopping in mid-air aiming their needle-like beaks into the sweet water. I was amazed by how these dazzling little creatures were insanely happy. My sister was in hummingbirds' heaven! She watched them in amazement and with admiration; she studied each one and adored their beauty as they gathered around the feeder.

Shortly after my sister left, so did the hummingbirds, I forgot all about the feeder...

When my sister arrived this summer, one of the first things she did was to find the feeder which was covered in the dust, spider web and dead leaves. It took her no time to get it to work! Once again the bright colored feeder was up, filled with yummy sugar water. And, once again the mid-air show of the hummingbirds retuned to my garden....

And once again when she left, so did the hummingbirds. The feeder was still half full; nothing was changed; except that my sister wasn't there to cheer them on!

As I sat alone in the garden waiting for them to come back, it dawned on me! LOVE...yes Love. I realized that even hummingbirds feel the love and attention. Love is vital to everything we do; otherwise, there would be nothing of intrinsic value in what we accomplish. Just take a moment and consider everything that you deem as a chore; what if you add love to these chores? How can love effect going to work, cooking, taking care of the kids, cleaning, grocery shopping, socializing, feeding the hummingbirds, and ......? Next time, when you are overwhelmed with responsibilities add LOVE and see how easy they become. Magically, the burdens lift away when we apply love. Imagine how our welfare increases if politicians, police offices, caregivers, and employers add LOVE to what they do. Love travels to wherever you direct it and it makes life a whole lot sweeter. Love is freeing, healing, blissful, harmonizing and creates a more joyful and prosperous life. Love transforms our lives like nothing else.

Love is one of the few things in life that we have an infinite amounts of. So go ahead! Give as much love as you would like; you won't run out. This summer, I was reminded by my sister and the hummingbirds to bring back love in everything I do; I invite you to do the same and feel the magic.

ART Therapy At The Wheel

Coming this September!

ART Therapy

Art Therapy is a unique and effective psychological approach that offers additional means of communication and provides a supportive, nonjudgmental process in a safe environment for exploring inner feelings. This visual language lays the necessary groundwork for healing, personal growth and positive change. A way of expressing outwardly that which we carry within. When words cannot express the hidden turmoil, the art produced by an individual is a raw and honest look into the innermost fears, obsessions, motivations, and personal traits. Every creative endeavor produces a type of self-portrait that can be interpreted and used to aid in further insight and personal growth.

Through Creative Expression, overcome the problems & challenges life presents
