Success in Every Back and Forth By Daniel Sadigh, PsyD, LMFT For a long time I tried to rush through everything I did. I wanted to get ahead, to accomplish more, to reach beyond where others had achieved; I wanted to "spring forward" in life. On the other hand, I hated to lose in any game, to fail in any project, to be behind others; I did not want to "fall back" in life. It took me a while to realize that the possibility of continuously getting ahead, without dropping behind, was unrealistic. Strangely enough I realized that the phrases of "spring forward" and "fall back" were also the expressions of annual changes in Daylight Saving Time. Simply enough I noticed that if we do not move back one hour, we cannot move forward another hour and keep in balance. We cannot "spring forward" if we do not "fall back". As spring arrived at 4:20 pm on Sunday, March 20, 2011 and I celebrated Persian New Year, I reviewed the past year. Many hours of reading, writing, teaching, and learning felt like swimming in a river and moving forward with the flow of water. Even the failures and disappointments felt like progress. After all, one never swims back against the river. Just like time, it does not matter if we gain or lose an hour of light, we are still getting ahead with life. We are continuously springing forward although we fall back at times. Then why can we call a seasonal time saving a "fall back" when we do not apply the same analogy to our personal fall backs? Why do we feel like we save something in one way and we lose something in another way by using the same words? I suggest that it is actually the same scenario in both: when we fall back in personal matters we require...continue reading Let's start this spring by looking at our failures of falling back as a time for saving our potentials for the time that we will be successfully springing ahead. Happy New Solar Year, 1390. Dr. Sadigh .... |

Bare Tree

Lately I've had to deal with a lot of challenges in my life. The feeling of uncertainty, guilt and the constant nagging in my head "why" overwhelmed me...after all, I was always the strong one! Always knew what to do, I was the one offering a helping hand to whoever needed it. I marinated myself for many days in the misery of "dead man walking", crying and beating myself up. I could not stop wondering what I did wrong. At first, describing the recent events to my friends, I kept calling them "endings", but soon I began to feel as if it was a process of renewal. There is a Chinese saying that goes "if the old doesn't go, the new cannot come." I was able to come to this huge shift in my life only when I was ready to accept "what is" and surrender to it completely. I began to view these difficult events as a shedding of burdens to allow me to move forward, to grow, to let the new in; and so, I've come to call them "changes", like seasons, rather than "endings". As I compare my life to seasons, I am reminded once again of the beauty of a bare tree in the winter...Standing tall, strong, naked and ripped from its covering, silently enduring the brutal winter, patiently waiting for spring to arrive. The trees know their time to bud and bloom will come...I am learning from the trees; deep inside, from a place of peace, I know that once again the time to bud and bloom is ahead for me as well. Being prone to worrying, over thinking and over analyzing, I had to do a lot of "un-learning" to get to the point where I am now. I am particularly blessed to have an amazing and understanding support system of friends and family providing me with strength, love and energy. I want to share with you a few easy steps that helped me sail the rough waters more smoothly; feel free to try them: I choose to spend time with people that inspire me and give me hope. I meditate regularly, as meditation gives me the clarity and the calmness I need to think and act responsibly. I do my best to focus on the positive side of life 80% of my awaken time. I pray, despite not being a religious person; I believe, I have faith. I emulate the bare trees, looking forward to a season of rebirth and renewal, trusting that my time to bloom is yet ahead. Happy Spring! Bonnie Sadigh Wheel of Wellbeing Co-Founder Painting by Nahid Hagigat |

"Relational Gestalt in Group Practice"
Led by Janice Gerard, Ph.D.
Tuesday April 19, 2011 7:30-9:00pm
All Salons are free- Only, $5 for CEU processing
Much of the writing and practice of Relational Gestalt has been focused on individual psychotherapy. The principle of "All experience is co-created" has been mainly conceptualized as the therapeutic dyad in relationship to each other and their interaction with the complexity of the field. The literature on Relational Gestalt as practiced in groups is limited. I would like to expand on several of the Relational Gestalt Principles by first naming them and extending these principles to group practice.
JANICE ROOSEVELT GERARD, Ph.D. is a licensed Clinical Psychologist and trainer in private practice She received her Doctorate in Psychology in 1986 from the California School of Professional Psychology-Los Angeles and became a Certified Gestalt Therapist in 1994. For many years she has led training groups, workshops and has presented at international conferences on the subjects of Gestalt Dreamwork and transpersonal psychology.
