The Gift of Beginnings
by Catherine Mullally

Banafsheh Sayyad2010 is not just a new year but the beginning of a new decade.  Most of us appreciate the symbolism of beginnings and the opportunity they present to create something new in our lives. At this time of year, we are urged  not to just reflect on the aspects of life that we wish to change.  We are asked to break through old boundaries and take action in a way that is both useful and sustaining.   Each of us has the opportunity to make this a full year of health, of love, prosperity and abundance.  The choice is ours!

Gandhi famously said, "We must be the change we wish to see in the world."  He understood that change does not occur from the outside.  So how can we internally prepare ourselves to make this year different than all those that preceded it?  Whatever our personal resolutions, these seven steps will help us create a new beginning for 2010.

·    Meditate
Fifty years ago meditation was most often associated with Eastern religions. Today we understand that meditation is a practice of quieting the mind, allowing us to connect with who we really are. Cultivating this silence improves our ability to focus, to "hear" our intuitive wisdom, and to receive those big insights that can be life-shifting.  Used by yogis for centuries, it is the mental preparation also used by successful business executives, athletes, actors, and anyone wishing to enhance the quality of their lives.

·    Tap into Higher Self
Our mental processes are dependent on the information we take in through the five senses.  If that information is flawed, or skewed by our perceptual filters, so will be our reasoning.  Our higher self, whether it's called spirit, consciousness or God, speaks to us through our intuition.  Meditation, concentration, any exercise that quiets the chatter of the mind helps open our intuitive channels.

"The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant.  We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift."   -  Albert Einstein

Dr. Sadigh's Note of the Month

Banafsheh Sayyad The New Year is the perfect time to evaluate your level of contentment and self-esteem.

Do you engage in any
of the following roles and limited range of behaviors?

Virginia Satir, originally a psychiatric social worker and one of the last century's most valued family system therapists, categorized four limiting roles that commonly develop during childhood and continue to plaay out in adulthood:

The Placater:    Are you a people pleaser who goes to great lengths in order to make others happy and seek approval?

The Blamer:   Are you an authoritarian who finds faults with others and disapproves difference to overcome feelings of anger?

The Computer:  Are you a calm, logical person who stays at a distance and is unaffected by the events as to show the irrelevance of the problems?

The Distractor:    Are you the joker who does not respond to the issues at hand and moves on to other issues before any feelings are felt?

If any of these roles seem familiar, you may also realize...
