Ash Wednesday

Parish E-news

July 15, 2010
Greetings!

My dear sisters and brothers in Christ -

Hope everyone is having a great summer.  Just a few quick reminders about important things coming up!

First, on the weekend of August 7-8 we will have a Blessing for College Students.  There was some confusion last year that it was only for freshmen going away to college for the first time - that is not the case!  The blessing is for all college students, freshmen through grad students, who are home for the summer and will be going back to college later this summer and fall.   Those college students who live at home will be blessed with all other students later this year when the academic year begins.

And finally, to plan ahead, this fall two exciting things are happening here at St. Max!

First, we will have a Parish Mission lead by Franciscan Father Charlie Smiech.  He will preach at all the Masses on October 9-10 and then lead us in a Parish Mission every evening through Thursday, October 14.  All parish-related and parish-sponsored activities - on and off our grounds - are cancelled that week so that everyone can attend the Parish Mission.  Please plan ahead for these dates so meetings or other activities can be rescheduled without hindering their progress.

And second, we will start a renewal program Why Catholic? this fall, too!  Small faith sharing groups will be formed for this program which uses Sacred Scripture and the Catechism of the Catholic Church as its foundation.  The entire program goes on for four years, which will lead us up to our parish's Twenty-Fifth Anniversary in 2014.  Small groups meet once a week for about six-eight weeks during each of eight "seasons" (there are two seasons per year, one in the fall and one in the spring.)  The beauty of the program is that anyone can participate at anytime - that is, the eight total seasons over four years, even though connected, are independent of each other.  So basically those interested make a once-a-week commitment for a few weeks each time - no prerequisites of prior involvement nor expectations of future involvement!  Hopefully many will be available for as many of these eight "seasons" as possible.  Look for more information on Why Catholic? to be forthcoming soon!

As we travel this summer, let us all pray for each other that we may reach our destinations and return home safely.  And don't forget to call ahead to your vacation spot and check out the Sunday Mass schedule for the nearest parish - summers are not vacations from God!

That's all for now - God bless one and all!

Fr. Geoff

 WHAT'S A "PSALMIST'?
HOW CAN I BECOME ONE?

According to the U.S. Bishops' recent document on liturgical music, Sing to the Lord, the psalmist is one who proclaims the verses of the Responsorial Psalm and leads the assembly in singing its response. The psalmist may also (as is the case here at St. Max) proclaim the Gospel Verse and lead the singing of other acclamations and litanies during the liturgy (in addition to or in the absence of a choir or ensemble.) The bishops go on to teach that the psalmist should possess "the ability for singing and a facility in correct pronunciation and diction. As one who proclaims the Word, the psalmist should be able to proclaim the text of the Psalm with clarity, conviction, and sensitivity to the text, the musical setting, and those who are listening."

We are in need of more psalmists for our Sunday
liturgies. You will be able to minister at the liturgy you regularly
attend and on the weekends you're available. Rehearsal is mostly on your own time, so it's not a huge time commitment outside of Mass (and Jeremy will provide you with everything you need, including time to go through things with him!)

If you have experience as a singer and would be willing
to join our group of already excellent psalmists, please contact
Jeremy Helmes in the parish office (Jeremy Helmes) for more information or call 777-4322, ext. 103.

SACRAMENT PREPARATION NEWS 7-15-10:

THINGS TO CONSIDER IF YOUR CHILD WILL BE CELEBRATING HIS/HER FIRST COMMUNION NEXT YEAR:

  • Please be attentive to continued Faith Formation for your child, especially in the home.  Parents are key to successful preparation and faith development.  Your child will model your behavior, beliefs and priorities.
  • Parent meetings for Sacrament Preparation will be held on the following days/times-please select one day to attend:

                  Tuesday, Sept. 14, 7:00-9:00 pm

                  Sunday, Sept. 19, 7:00-9:00 pm

  • Please take some time to read and review Sacraments for Young People, a publication of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, before preparation formally begins at church.  You will have a better sense of the process and expectations.  (This document can be found on the parish website, www.saint-max.org, link to Sacraments, then to either Reconciliation or Eucharist.)

Please contact Mary Montour, 777-4322, X-120, with any

questions or concerns regarding the Sacrament Preparation

program, or e-mail: mmontour@saint-max.org.  Thank you!
