Pentecost

Greetings!

My dear sisters and brothers in our Lord Jesus Christ,
A Blessed Eastertide to all!

This weekend we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord.  Traditionally on the Thursday after the Sixth Sunday of Easter, i.e. the actual fortieth day of the Easter season, this holyday has been transferred to a Sunday for the past several years.  Transferring the Ascension allows for all three of the major Eastertide feasts - Easter Sunday, the Ascension and Pentecost - to all be celebrated well by as many of the faithful as possible on Sundays.  This "practice" of transferring holydays to Sundays is not new - the Epiphany (January 6) and Corpus Christi (the second Thursday after Pentecost) are also holydays of obligation in the Universal Church calendar and both have been transferred to Sundays for many decades.

Also, we have received word from the Priests' Personnel Office that Fr. Rob Muhlenkamp (to be ordained a priest on Saturday, May 22, 2010) will be in residence here at St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish starting this summer.   He has been assigned as teacher and chaplain at Hamilton Badin High School.  Since his full-time ministry will be outside the parish, he will provide sacramental help for us on Sundays during the school year with some additional sacramental duties assigned to him when school is not in session.  I enjoyed living with Fr. McCarthy for the first nine months I was here, and it will be good to have someone else living in the house with me again!

As a resident priest with full-time ministry outside the parish, he will not be a core member of the Pastoral Staff and will not have an office in the Parish Offices.  We also need to keep in mind that since he is not assigned to the parish per se, we cannot expect him in any way to minister to the community in the same way former parochial vicars did.

I encourage everyone to keep Deacon (soon-to-be Fr.) Rob and Deacon (soon-to-be Fr.) Tim Ralston (assigned to St. Charles Borromeo in Kettering) in your prayers as they are on retreat next week before their ordination to the priesthood a week from this Saturday.

Next Sunday, May 23, is Pentecost, the fiftieth and last day of this great Easter season.  If you can remember, wear red so that the deacons and I will not be the only red-clad ones in church!
