A food that symbolizes prayer and fasting is the pretzel (from the Latin word, bracellę, "arms".) It is a traditional Lenten bread of very ancient origin. Early Christians made the bread from flour, salt and water only, shaping it to represent the folded arms in prayer, just as they are made to this day. The German tribes who invaded Rome called the bracellę "brezel'" or "prezel". Pretzels are traditionally eaten throughout Lent, and in some places are especially associated with Saint Joseph's Day [March 19] which usually falls within Lent. |

Greetings!
Fr. McCarthy has been appointed temporary administrator at Holy Name of Jesus Parish in Trenton following the death of Fr. George Klein. Please pray for Fr. George Klein; and for Fr. McCarthy and the parishioners of Holy Name of Jesus Parish in Trenton as they work through their grief. Please pray for me as well, as we all adjust to having one priest for the time being.
I will celebrate all the weekday liturgies, but starting Monday, April 12, there will be Word and Communion services on Mondays (and other days when I cannot be in two places at one time!) I am hopeful we will have a visiting priest here (at least one Mass on Sunday morning rotating through the Mass times) until the end of June. By then we should have a much clearer picture of what will be "regular" for us. For the next two weekends I will have all the Sunday Masses here, as well as the TRIDUUM liturgies.
Please remember the special opportunities for prayer that are being offered during Lent: - Additional times for individual confessions on Thursdays after the morning Mass and from 6:00-7:00 p.m.
Saturday, March 27 - 9:00-11:00 a.m. Monday, March 29 - 4:00-6:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. - Stations of the Cross on Fridays - An additional weekday Mass on Saturdays at 8:30 a.m. And remember, all Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat.
Our holiest of holydays, the Paschal TRIDUUM, are fast approaching. Please have these days set aside on your personal calendars as days to "be in church" and free from other regular activities. And for those traveling, remember to call ahead and get the TRIDUUM schedules at the Catholic parishes nearest to your destination. As an assistance, please click here or on the picture icon at the right to visit MassTimes.org, a ministry for traveling Catholics.
That's all for now. God bless one and all! Fr. Geoff

1989 Paulist Pictures Film "Romero"
On March 24th, 1980, while performing a funeral mass in the Chapel of Divine Providence Hospital, Archbishop Oscar Romero was shot to death by a paid assassin. Only moments before his death, he had reminded the mourners of the parable of wheat. His prophetic words: "Those who surrender to the service of the poor through love of Christ will live like the grain of wheat that dies...The harvest comes because of the grain that dies...We know that every effort to improve society, above all when society is so full of injustice and sin, is an effort that God blesses, that God wants, that God demands of us." This year marks the 30th anniversary of the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero of San Salvador. To commemorate this anniversary, we will show the 1989 Paulist Pictures' film Romero on Saturday, March 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Conference Room. The film runs just under two hours and is rated PG-13 for adult themes and graphic depictions. So that we can adequately prepare, please let us know if you will be attending by registering here. |
