CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES RESPONSE TO THE CRISIS IN HAITI

CRS has mobilized an immediate major aid response to quake-ravaged Haiti and invites all concerned supporters to join us in the outreach.  Click here to go to Catholic Relief Services website to learn more and to offer support.

Archbishop Dennis Schnurr has requested that all parishes take up a second collection this weekend, Jan. 16-17, to support the humanitarian relief and reconstruction efforts that will be taking place in Haiti.  This collection will go to address as many aspects of this crisis as possible, including responses from the U.S. bishops and the Church in Latin America, and the work of Catholic Relief Services.

We offer the words of Pope Benedict....

I invite everyone to join me in prayer to the Lord for the victims of this disaster and for those who mourn their loss. I assure my spiritual closeness to those who lost their homes and all those who are suffering in various ways from this major disaster, and I ask God for comfort and solace in their suffering. I appeal to the generosity of all, to not abandon these brothers and sisters in a time of need and grief, and that the concrete solidarity and active support of the international community is not lacking. The Catholic Church will not fail to take immediate action through its charitable organizations to meet the most immediate needs of the population.

Greetings!
In all the dioceses of the United States of America, Friday, January 22 shall be observed as a particular day of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion and of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life.  (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, #373).
On this day, commemorating the anniversary of the 1973 Supreme Court ruling Roe vs. Wade, legalizing abortion in our country, we pause to remember the millions of innocent lives which have been lost through the murderous act of abortion.
In observance of this day of penance, all are invited to choose one or more of the following:

            At St. Maximilian Kolbe Church
·         8:30 a.m.  - "Mass for Peace and Justice" will be celebrated
·         At the end of Mass, day-long exposition of the Blessed Sacrament
·         2:00 p.m. - The Rosary for Life will be prayed
·         6:15 p.m. - Simple meal of soup, bread, drinks
·         7:00-8:00 p.m. - Holy Hour for the Unborn (quiet time before the Blessed Sacrament, vespers, benediction)
·         8:00 p.m. - Showing of the movie "Bella" with discussion afterwards.  (2007, 91 minutes, rated PG-13 for thematic elements and brief disturbing images.  Bella tells the story of a young, unmarried waitress who finds herself pregnant and without work after coming in late several days because of morning sickness. The restaurant's chef, taken by her plight, becomes her sole confidant. He helps her walk through her decision on what to do with her pregnancy. In the process, he bears secrets from his own mysterious past, which reveal his tenderness and passion for her and the child she is carrying.)

In other churches and at home
·         Make a visit to any Catholic church to spend time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament
·         Spend some extra time in prayer at home, e.g. pray a family rosary
·         Use the prayer below remembering the millions of babies who have been aborted as well as those coping with and grieving the loss their aborted children

            Some other suggestions
·         Abstain from meat
·         Fast for the day, from a meal, or from snacks between meals
·         Give up television, music, video games, or some other entertainment
·         Donate monies saved from above to any pro-life group or agency

Prayer to End Abortion
Lord God, we praise and thank You for the gift of our lives, and for the lives of all human beings.  There is nothing more destructive to human life than abortion, yet we rejoice that You have conquered death by the resurrection of Your Son.  Help us to do our part to end abortion - never to be silent, never to be passive, and never to be forgetful of the unborn.  Give us strength to defend human life, especially in the womb, until all humans are protected.  Guide our nation to truly be a nation with liberty and justice not just for some, but for all.  We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

That's all for now - God Bless!
Fr. Geoff
 Rite of Welcome/Acceptance

On November 15th at the 8:00 a.m. Mass we welcomed men and women from the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) into our Church community of St. Maximilian.
We also have adults and children who have just begun the process and are known as Inquirers.  After time of preparation they will go thru the Rite of Welcome on January 31st  at the 8:00 Mass.

We have both Candidates and Catechumens in the process.
A Candidate is a person who has been baptized in another faith or in the Catholic faith with no formal religious education. They are: Tiara Metcalf, Tracy Munafo, Lana Elliott, Kathleen Heffner, Brian Sedra, Steven Smith,

A Catechumen is one who has not been baptized.
They are: Elizabeth Black, Jake Butler, Zach Butler, Sabrina Diaz, Leona Edwards, Kalette Hittle, Samantha Siry, Chloe Thomas, Seth Thomas.
This phase of the process is known as the Catechumen period.  They meet weekly to grow in their awareness of God's invitation to them of conversion and community.
They gather at Mass for the Liturgy of the Word, and are sent forth after the homily with a Blessing to pray and reflect on the Scripture of the day.  This is Dismissal Catechesis.

We ask all of you to pray for a Candidate, Catechumen or Sponsor in your daily prayer intentions until Easter, this is an easy way for the whole family to pray.  Also, pray for your own prayer life to be strengthen and grow closer to God as we build the Kingdom of God.

Please join us in Prayer!

 The Story of a Priest

Dedicated to those who dedicate themselves to us!
 Saturday, January 16th, 2010 7:30pm
St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish
5720 Hamilton-Mason Road
Liberty Township, OH 45011
Welcome adults, young adults, teenagers and older children!
 Cost:  Free Will Offering
Written and produced for the Year of the Priest, this humorous and touching tale tells the story of Fr. Mike, a young priest recently appointed pastor at the suburban parish St. Somewhere. Thrust into the midst of parish politics, fundraising fiascoes, and the day-to-day challenge of caring for souls, Fr. Mike's faith begins to falter . . . until a visit by an angel, as well as examples of great priests of the past, show him the true way of love and sacrifice.
A funny, profound, and heartwarming story
Dedicated to those who dedicate themselves to us-our priests.

Returning Catholics:  Welcome Home

This program is for persons who have drifted away from the Church and will be held on Saturdays, January 16 through February 13 at 9am in the St. Max Hospitality Room.  Most of us do not have to look far to find non-practicing Catholics in our family, circle of friends or neighborhood.  As baptized Catholics, we have a precious gift of faith and love from the Lord that needs to be shared with our non-practicing brothers and sisters.  First, we need to pray for them.  Next, we need to extend a personal invitation to them to come home to the Catholic Church.  Most people are just waiting for an invitation.  Many mistakenly think they are excommunicated; others carry tremendous guilt and misinformation about the Church and fear rejection.  St. John and St. Max are offering special programs to welcome our sisters and brothers back to active participation.   Contact Carol Heuser at 777-4322 ext. 104 or Deacon Jeff Merrell at 777-4322 ext. 220 for more information.
